Siwash, mascot and fighting duck of the 2nd Marine Division, was nominated for the Purple Heart for multiple breast wounds sustained from a pecking enemy rooster during the battle of Tarawa on the 23rd day ofNovember l943. Siwash displayed uncanny bravery during the fierce battle with the rooster, eventually chasing the rooster away.

This act of bravery was consistent with the tradition of the United States Marine Corps and received international attention by being publisized in "Life" magazine. Siwash, we Marines salute you.
