WERE ON THE "WEB" Ive assembled a simple home page for our Post via a site called "GeoCities." I will be working on an easier link than the current one (http://www.geocities.com/ Pentagon/Quarters/5425/) in the future, but for the time being, I intend to concentrate my efforts on the page design. I have just started construction of the site and plan to expand to include information on the Ladies Auxiliary and our recent Golden Anniversary Celebration. Ive also set up an email account via a Web service called HotMail our email address is "[email protected]". I try to check on email every few days, so if you get a chance to send a message I should be able to respond promptly. You will, of course, need access to the Internet and one of the more recent Web browsers such as Microsoft Explorer or Netscape Navigator to visit our site. For those of you not too familiar with the Internet or terms like "email" or "browser," Ill include a short article in the next edition of the Short Sheet with a brief explanation of these and other networking terms. Dont forget to sign the Guest book if you do have the opportunity to visit our Web site. CATHOLIC WAR VETERANS MEETING NOTICE Mark your calendars. Regular scheduled membership meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM. Officers meet before the general membership meeting at 7:00 PM. The June meeting will likely be the last general membership meeting until September. The Commander and officers of Post 731 invite you to attend and participate in the general membership meetings. Well keep you updated of Post activities with a Summer edition of the Short Sheet and via our Web site.
CORSAC HOME ASSOCIATIONThe CORSAC Home Association Board of Directors meets every other month, on the third Wednesday of the month, at 7:30 PM. The next meeting is currently scheduled for Wednesday, May 20th. All members are invited to this meeting during which we will vote on the proposed amendments to the Constitution and by-laws which were posted in the lounge on January 21st and which were also included in the February edition of the Short Sheet. COMMANDER'S REPORT - Fred Steigerwalt MEMORIAL DAY: Memorial Day is approaching quickly and we are hard at work preparing for the festivities. This year, we will be participating in the Memorial Day celebration with the Vietnam Veterans. The schedule is as follows: Saturday, May 23rd: Assemble at the Post at 10:00 A.M. to visit cemeteries. Sunday, May 24th: Assemble at the Post at 9:45 A.M. Attend the 10:30 A.M. Memorial Mass followed by Memorial services at Father Hickeys grave. Commanders Breakfast to follow at the Post. Monday, May 25th: Assemble at Grace Chapel parking lot at 10:00 A.M. for parade ceremonies. Post Memorial services to follow parade ceremonies. Open house at the Post at 12:30 P.M. Please dont wait to get involved - we need your support and participation! NEW POST FLAG: In conjunction with Memorial Day, we are in the process of purchasing a new Post flag. The flag will be ready by Memorial Day. STATE CONVENTION: The CWV PA State Convention will be held on June 3rd through the 6th at the Gettysburg Days Inn. The cost is $65.00 for a single and $80.00 for a double. I unfortunately am not able to attend. In order to help defray the total cost to attend the convention, Post members voted to contribute $100.00 to any member who can attend. Please contact the Post if interested.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Its time to start on the formation of a nominating committee for 1999 elections. Plan to discuss this issue at the next general membership meeting. JACKPOT: Tickets have been recently received for the CWV DEPARTMENT OF PA Jackpot. They are going fast and may even be sold out by the time you receive this newsletter. Drawings will be held for individual prizes of $500.00! If you are interested, you know what to do ("please contact the Post at 446-7555..."). A SPECIAL REQUEST: The 1995 winner of the "William J. Rachor" award for Outstanding Community Service, Inez Coll, has contacted the Post to request financial assistance for a trip to Arizona to help Navajo Indians. This request was received via the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Youth and Young Adults. It appears that we made an excellent selection for the Bill Rachor award in the past as evidenced by Inez continued devotion to community service. The Post has voted to support Inez in her efforts with a monetary contribution of $100.00. Inez is exactly the type of individual we are hoping to support with the Bill Rachor award. We wish her Godspeed on her journey to Arizona.
BATTER UP: Our baseball team (reference the April Short Sheet) is the "Blue Jays." We beat the American Legion Post team 22 - 7! A schedule will be posted soon at the Post. 1ST VICE COMMANDER'S REPORT - Sam Zampino CORPORATE SUNDAY AND COMMANDERS BREAKFAST: The next Corporate Sunday was incorrectly reported in the April edition as May 13th; it should have been reported as May 31st. However, it was agreed at the April 1st meeting to have the Corporate Mass on May 24th and make it part of the Memorial Day weekend celebration. Mass will be at 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Church. Please make plans to attend this Mass with your family. A Commanders Breakfast will be held after the Mass. HOLY THURSDAY ADORATION HOUR APRIL 19TH: Twenty Post and ten Auxiliary members participated in this special prayer service which began at 11:00 P.M., the Golden Memorial Hour of the Catholic War Veterans. Once again, our Post was well represented by its devoted men and women. Vince Hanna started the services with a reading of our Memorial Verse and then led us in praying the scriptural rosary. Our thanks to Vince and to the Post and Auxiliary members who made this CWV group service a notable success. A palm cross and flowers were placed in front of our Memorial on Palm Sunday and on Easter. Next Tuesday, the Committee will plant flowers in front of the Memorial and prepare for Memorial Day services. FATHER WHELANS SILVER JUBILEE: Mass of Thanksgiving is to be offered on May 17th at 12 noon at Sacred Heart Church. The Post will make a special presentation at the Mass. The cost of the flag, pole, and bracket will be $35.00 per set. Their goal is to have these flags in place by Memorial Day. Our Auxiliary is also planning to donate a flag. Dont forget about our "Match Jack" campaign we have a long way to go! Casino Trip Update Reminder Just a reminder that Vince Hanna is stepping down as the coordination of the casino trips. Anyone interested in taking over is encouraged to contact the Post. Vince is willing to assist during the transition period. Shes One of Us I recently had the opportunity to speak with a new member of our ranks, Marsha Four. Marsha is a registered nurse who until a couple of years ago worked at Riddle Memorial Hospital. In 1993, Marsha helped to bring a program called "Stand Down" to Philadelphia. STANDOWN is a program which assists homeless veterans. Marsha contributed to their efforts by helping to write grants aimed to help veterans. It was while providing support to the STANDOWN program that Marsha was offered a position with the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service Center, a non-profit organization where she is currently employed. Marsha has also been active with the Vietnam Veterans of America organization for about 11 years. The Vietnam Veterans of America sponsors a program called the Veterans Initiative, a program that has been in existence for about 5 to 6 years. The Veterans Initiative program is a vet-to-vet program which sponsors programs such as the one in which veterans from the United States and Vietnam exchange information to help each group locate MIAs through personal contact with veterans who were involved with the war. Another aspect of the Veterans Initiative program is one involved with the investigation into the effects of Agent Orange. Any of you familiar with Agent Orange know that it can be a very painful and deadly affliction. Members of the Veterans Initiative have made a number of trips back to Vietnam in an attempt to learn more about Agent Orange, and Marsha has been invited to be a participant on the next trip. In fact, Marsha is the first woman veteran to participate in one of these trips. She will be doing some field work and fact finding during her visit. The team Marsha is a member of will be visiting the cities of Hanoi, DaNang, Plaiku, Ho Chi Minh City, and Tay Ninh. The length of the trip will be two weeks in duration. Marsha is looking forward to the trip, but like any of us who have traveled far from home is praying for a safe trip. She emphasized that she could not attempt such an arduous task without the support of her husband, Tony, and their children. Please keep Marsha and her coworkers in your prayers. We look forward to hearing about your travels, Marsha, when you return in June.
ANOTHER HALL OF FAMER: Congratulations to Chick Welde who was recently inducted into the St. Tommy Moore Sports Hall of Fame on April 26th. Look for Chick and Mike Cudemo on the starting roster of the Eagles this Fall! |
