The Fourteenth Regiment was formed in August 1861 at Fort Turnbell, Connecticut. During the Civil War, they participated in every major campaign in Virginia. At the war's end, the Regiment asked General Meade, commander of the Army of the Potomac, where the Regiment should be positioned for the final review. He answered, "The Fourteenth has always been to the front of the battle and deserved the place of honor...TAKE THE RIGHT OF THE LINE." This became the motto of the Regiment.
After fighting Indians in Arizona, Montana and Wyoming, the Fourteenth Regiment moved to Vancouver Barracks, Washington until 1898. War with Spain sent the Regiment to the Pacific to seize Spanish possessions. On the way to the Philippines, the Fourteenth took the island of Guam and arrived at Manila in time to take part in the final assault on the capital.
On 8 July 1900, Chinese nationalists revolted and besieged the embassies of the United States and other European nations in Peking. The regiment was sent to the rescue and led the way to and over the walls of the capital. When the Chinese surrendered, the Fourteenth Regiment acquired the nickname the "Golden Dragons."
Revolution in Mexico required that the Fourteenth be sent to Douglas, Arizona, in 1916. These duties prevented the Fourteenth from completing its preparations for deployment to France during World War I and the Regiment was sent to the Panama Canal. By 1943, the Regiment had been returned to the United States to train and prepare for operations in Europe against the Germans. The Regiment landed in France in January 1945 and reached the fighting front in March. It participated in campaigns to break the Siegfried Line, the Rhine River, and the drive across Central Germany and Austria.
The Regiment was deactivated at the end of the war but was reactivated at Fort Carson, Colorado in 1948. On 1 August 1951, the Fourteenth Regiment was transferred to the 25th Infantry Division in Korea. During the Korean War, the "Golden Dragons" acquitted themselves in small unit actions in Chorwon and on Heartbreak Ridge. After the cease-fire the Regiment returned with the 25th Division to Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
The Fourteenth was recalled to combat during Vietnam in 1966. The Second Battalion of the Fourteenth Infantry Regiment fought with the 25th Division through Tet in April 1968, the battle of Tay Nihn and the Cambodian incursion in 1970. By December 1970, the Fourteenth Regiment had returned to Hawaii. The Second Battalion was deactivated on 5 June 1972.
On 19 December 1985, the Second Battalion of the Fourteenth Infantry Regiment was reactivated at Fort Benning, Georgia, as the first Light Infantry COHORT Battalion in the 10th Mountain Division. On 4 November 1988, the Second Battalion, Fourteenth Infantry Regiment, was permanently restationed at Fort Drum, New York.
The Golden Dragons have also participated in operational deployments to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Homestead, FL; Mogadishu, Somalia during Operation Continue Hope; and most recently to Haiti for Operation Uphold Democracy. The Golden Dragons continue to hold that place of honor, that place they have held since 1861, at the RIGHT OF THE LINE!
