23rd Fighter Group

The 23rd Fighter Group was formed on July 4, 1942 from the remnants of the Amercian Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers), when that organization's contracts with the government of Nationalist China expired. Initially it consisted of 5 pilots and a small number of service personnel, the majority of the AVG pilots either returning to their former services, gaining employment with civilian airlines, or returning to civilian life, though an additional 20 former AVG pilots eventually agreed to stay on temporarily with the 23rd to help train green USAAF replacement pilots. The 23rd was part of the China Air Task Force (CATF) which eventually became the 14th Air Force.
