The RBS Express...
This picture shows the RBS Express in a typical configuration. It was a rail-based system
containing all the necessities a radar site needed. Included, along with the equipment,
were dining cars, berthing cars, power production, offices, etc. This self-contained unit
would be periodically relocated to different geographical locations. The reason was to
provide aircrews some different scenery while practicing bomb runs in the hopes of
avoiding a routine. The aircrews would be exposed to different terrain features and target
locations which required unique mission planning.
This photo was taken when one of the four trains was parked near Hawthorne, Nevada in June 1960. Here you see the support cars on the left. Moving to the right, there is the MSQ-39, TLQ-11, MPS-9, and the IFF/SIF for the MSQ-39.
