USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr.

U.S.S. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr.
DD-850

Here are some pictures furnished by Bill Lucas, now of Fontana, California, and ex Storekeeper striker on the Joey P in 1946-47.

Here's a photo from the christening ceremony of DD-850.

The writing on the face of the picture says "CMDR H G Moore 1st Skipper" and "Jean Kennedy"

Here's a snapshot of the crew "manning the rail for the President of Venezuela" "on the occasion of the ceremonies of the taking of office of President Gonzalez Videla" in November, 1946.

And here's a BIG panorama of the Valparaiso harbor. Please remember that this picture is two photos, each folded, one much darker than the other, and both over 50 years old. Scanning is never easy, anyway! ;^)

This photo is marked "Leyte Wisconsin Vermillion (AKA107) DD Kennedy DD Fox DD Massey " on the reverse.

And here's a map of the harbor area of Valparaiso, Chile, 1946.

This photo is labelled "ADM Leahy, oldest 5-star Admiral in Navy, transferred from Wisconsin to Kennedy off coast of Peru. We then went into Panama Canal flying 5 stars"

On the 27th of October, 1946, The Kennedy crossed the equator. Here's a picture of John W. Lucas (must be William, eh Bill?), an article from the Malden, Mass. newspaper, and a copy of Bill's Shellback card.

This photo is labelled "Ski -me Coddington". Looks like it was a fun liberty!

Thanks very much to Bill Lucas for these great photos!
