Duke & Shari's Photos
Submarine, Navy, Khaki Ball pictures (updated 04/00)
We are particularly fond of this photo. This was aboard the USS Archerfish SSN-678 on Family Cruise Day in May of 1995. This was taken by a photographer at the New London Day newspaper in New London, CT and was one of several photos that went with an article on the day.
Shari has been lucky enough to have a chance to "ride" both of Dukes submarines...the USS Bergall and the USS Archerfish.
On the USS Bergall (SSN-667) we left Norfolk Naval Base at about 5 am and took a glorious sail up the Chesapeake Bay to Annapolis, Maryland to the Naval Academy where the boat was going to stay all weekend for the midshipmen to view and tour. It was something Shari will NEVER forget. The most beautiful thing was being up in the sail on a crisp October mid-morning and watching the little sailboats quickly move out of the way of the big black submarine.
On the USS Archerfish (SSN-678) we got to submerge in the sound outside of New London Naval Base in Groton, Connecticut. Another wonderful experience and this time Shari got to see what it feel like going under the water. Something she didn't get to do on the USS Bergall.
Both were an experience that you can't explain. Its a very neat and rare opportunity to be able to do. Highly recommended if you every have a chance.
