Dear Sir: What a great treat! My wonderful Father-In-Law, Flying Officer M.Wilson Donaldson(a.k.a."Weasel" Donaldson)was in Colditz for five years and five days! He was a Canadian who joined the R.A.F. to become a pilot and just shortly after the war started, he rashed his Hampton Bomber on the coastline of Norway. He was captured and taken to Colditz where he was involved in many escapades! He had many stories and many old friends from this encampment. His family was very proud of him and he has left a legacy f accomplishment and bravery for his family! We loved him dearly! Georgia Donaldson [email protected]

Hoping to research names of WWII POW's. Looking for information re: Frank Butters /Buttars. Said to have been captured and escaped from Germany via Spain on more that five occassions. The last incarceration prior to the war ending was thought to be Colditz. The may have been a book published in UK late 40's early 50's regarding his escapades. Frank Butters/Buttars was a Scot from the Dundee area

What an amazing site. Having read & re-read Cptn Reid's and Herr Eggers' (excellent & still in print) books, I have thirsted for fresh information - not only anecdotes but also some decent images of all these places I've read about for several years. Your site has both, and I have yet to visit every page! Brilliant

As one who has read Pat Reid's Escape From Colditz and Men Of Colditz several times, these photo's take me right into the pages of his books! I hope the restoration of this castle comes off as planned as it is a monument to the struggle and perseverence o men from many nations in their attempt for liberty and freedom and their courage needs to be an inspiration to generations for years to come. Everyone interested in this site should read Pat Reid's books if they can find copies!

I visited the castle while in the RAF just after the Berlin wall came down, it was still in use but we were allowed access to the chapel and saw the tunnel we also entered the cellar where the tunnel started ater it came from the tower. There was a pictur of Pat Ried hanging on the wall. The small museum was in a house around the corner and had lots of items from the original camp escape museum, Buchenwald is not far away, well worth a visit.

Relatives of my family recently visited the castle on a day trip from the UK. They related such exciting and clever accounts of escape attempts that I went on-line to see if a site existed. This site is SUPERB, very informative and great with the pictures as well. Total credit to an excellent site. Thanks

I saw the documentary on channel 4 a couple of weeks ago and became really interested. I'm only 14 and I thinks it's important that other younger people can enjoy learning about history, and this website can do just that.

Thank you for such an excellent site. I was interested in how the French/British radio was rediscovered in 1993. I have a press cutting from 27 January 1993 which carries an interview with Jack Best where he says that he actually rediscovered the radio r om in 1973 when visiting the castle. He and others sealed up the room and did not tell the East Germans. It took a further 20 years before it was finally discovered.
