Cotton Fields

Creedence Clearwater Revival

You are the honored quest to enter this page.

When I was a little bitty baby
My mama would rock me in my cradle
In them old cotton fields back home.

It was down in Louisiana
Just about a mile from Texarkana
In them old cotton fields back home.

Now, when them cotton fields get rotten
You can't pick very much cotton
In them old cotton fields back home.

It was down in Louisiana
Just about a mile from Texarkana
In them old cotton fields back home.

Originally written by Huddie Leadbetter (Leadbelly)
I have always felt that whoever wrote Cotton Fields had never been to Texarcana.   Leadbelly spent most of his life in prison for crimes that were made up by the locals, because he was black.

I remember driving from Shreveport, Louisiana to Texarkana, Texas many times when I was a boy.  It seemed like a long. long drive. There is not a place in Louisiana that is about a mile from Texarcana, but it rhymes.   Click here to see a map.

It is interesting that Texarcana is divided down the middle by the Texas,  Arkansas border.  The west side of town is Texarcana, Texas and the east side of town is Texarcana, Arkansas.  There is not a Texarcana, Louisiana.

I was born and raised in Monroe, Louisiana. I   remember driving down highway 165 south of Monroe.  I saw blacks (we called them colored in those days) picking cotton balls along the highway.  They stooped low to the ground bent over all day in all kinds of weather stuffing the fluffy white balls into long burlap bags.

The demand for cheap labor in the cotton fields and Eli Whitney's cotton gin brought about the slave trade and eventually the American Civil War.  More American boys were killed in the Civil War than all the other wars combined.
