We write not only to inform you of
our project, regarding mobilisation and troop movements of the British Army for
the Boer War, but to seek your involvement.
The Project is the creation of a database which, when
completed, will give full mobilisation details of individuals who served in the
Boer War, as well as troop movements by company, battalion or squadron
throughout the War and the demobilisation details including the return journey
of individuals who served in this War. In
many cases it will be possible to track the movements of an individual from
embarkation for South Africa, throughout the War, to demobilisation.
The Database contains technical data regarding the
vessels the men sailed in as well as details of shipping. General casualty information by battalion is also available.
Bibliographical information is also contained in the database, where
diaries are available or have been traced location details will also be given.
The database will contain photographs and extracts from relevant diaries
wherever possible or details of availability of such.
The Project is approximately three years old but it still has
a long way to go. There are a
number of individuals actively involved in carrying out research for the
Project. Information from
individuals has been and continues to be gratefully received. A number of Regiments have shown their support by both
permitting research to be carried out in their archives and supplying
information.
The Project works purely on a voluntary basis, when
complete it should prove a useful and comprehensive tool to both historians and
genealogists.
If you would like to help either by supplying information
from your own research, submitting articles for the web page or inputting data
please contact us. We would also like to hear from anyone interested in
becoming webmaster.
