THE DIARY
NOTE; ALL ENTRIES IN GREEN INDICATE AN ENTRY INTO THE DIARY ON DAYS THAT LAWMAN DID NOT WORK.
April 3, 1999
I just got back from Disney World and man was it fun! The only draw back was
the long lines at the various attractions, but my wife and especially my daughter had a lot of fun.It was nice to get away, forget about law enforcement stuff, and just enjoy ourselves. It's been a long time since we have been able to do that.
Here is a 'ASK A COP' request that I found interesting. Thanks to the visitor for sending it!
ASK A COP
READER WROTE:
I just discovered "Diary of a Lawman" I've read with interest the entries through October and intend to keep reading. I'd like to hear what you think about between calls. Do you keep replaying the last call through your head? Worry? Daydream? Listen to the local jazz station? Call your friends on the cell phone? Compose your daily diary entry in your head for later typing into the machine at home?
LAWMAN'S REPLY:
It's funny you should ask, but I do find myself daydreaming and going over calls in
my head. Much of my 'daydreaming' consists of imaginary or hypothetical
situations and how I react. For example, one of the more common scenarios I go
over in my head is how I would react in a situation where I am trying to help
another officer who is in trouble (by that I mean outnumbered and getting his rear
beat). I think pepperspray, get to him, and get him out.It isn't Heroics I am thinking about, but worries that cause the daydreaming. It is
a situation I have faced in the past, and my training kicks in. But I find that I am
better prepared for those scenarios after daydreaming about all kinds of situations
I could encounter on the job. I don't know if other officers do the same mind game
with themselves and can only speak for myself.I am not nuts. Things do get scarey once in a blue moon, and these scarey things
are the ones that occupy my mind from time to time.I usually begin the shift by tuning in to a local country music station. After the first
call it usually gets turned off. The voice of the dispatcher becomes my company for
the rest of the shift, automatically, and without thinking about the stereo the rest of
the shift. In between calls I think about a number of things, such as what I would
like to do next, what officer is where and do they need me on the calls they are on,
am I close enough to a call that I should respond or let the primary officer respond
on to the call, etc... I can't really narrow it down to one thing or even a few things
that I think about in between calls while on the job.Last, I think about and compose the entries when I sit at home after work and
never on the job. There are to many other things going on at work and I know I
can write and compose at home.April 14, 1999
I have been a little slack in making entries over the past three or four weeks.
School, part time jobs, work, and family have taken much of my time recently.Anyway, not to many real exciting things have been going on. I have been looking
for a homicide suspect recently but haven't found him. He is suppose to be at a
residence in my sector according to the detectives, but I haven't seen him there. I
kind of think the killer went back to Mexico where he is originally from.I did serve another Homicide warrant. This fella wasn't to hard to locate, he was
in the hospital with a gunshot wound himself. His wounds have incapacitated him
for the time being. This fella was also a Hispanic from Mexico as well.I have seen Law Enforcement change a great deal over the past few years. More
technology coming in (at least in our department), people showing more and more
disrespect for the police, and a growing Hispanic population are some of the more
prevalent changes I have noticed.Even in the Hispanic population I have noticed a change. A couple years ago I
never had a problem with Hispanics when I had to arrest one. Over the past year I
have had to fight a couple to get them into custody. It's funny how the world changes. You never know what's in store for you next,
especially in law enforcement.
