The Beast

I feel it welling up from my soul
I feel it when threatened,
I feel it when helpless.
It washes over me like a cresting wave.

I must control this beast.
Least it be released.

It seeks to destroy all,
Even it's host,
It is savage and unthinking.
The cost can be horrific.

I must control this beast,
least it be released.

It feeds on the fear,
It feeds on the anger.
Of all injustices,
However slight.

I must control this beast,
least it be released.

My body quakes,
My limbs shake.
My eyes are tear filled,
I try to speak but, only snarls escape.

I must control this beast,
least it be released.

My heart seeks to leap out of my chest,
My blood burns hot.
My head throbs,
Then I black out.

I am the beast,
it has been released.

I've freed the beast before,
when I was much younger.
Felt the exhaustion and pain,
Knowing the consequences of my actions.

I must control this beast,
least it be released.

Over the years,
I've grown wiser.
The beast can be fettered,
It can be used in a positive manner.

I now control this beast,
least it be released.
