Help-Net
for Cadet Air & Highway Travelers

Aid for stranded or delayed cadets, provided by volunteer Coast Guard families

Cadets and Parents -

  • PLEASE - Only cadets should call these volunteers, and only after they find themselves in difficulty.
  • Call airlines before cadets start out, for anticipated weather conditions at connecting airports.
  • Check flight status at the airlines' Internet websites. Most have Arrival/Departure displays on-line, similar to the monitors at airports.
  • Remind your cadets to notify the Academy "watch office" if they are delayed, before the time they are due back.
  • The USO has service centers at every military airport and most international US and foreign airports. Cadets should ask where these facilities are located. They would be afforded use of a TV lounge, coffee, soda, and beds if available. The USO asks for nothing, but donations are accepted. Given a weather delay of any kind, the USO can be a godsend to the weary military traveler.
  • All overseas U.S. military installations are "ports in a storm" to our service people - including Academy cadets and midshipman. If lost or stranded overseas, Coasties should just ask the local police (most speak English) for the location of the nearest U.S. military installation. (Also, the NATO military - particularly the German, French, Canadian, and British - will usually assist American service members.)
  • - We will not post volunteers' names or phone numbers on the Internet. Every cadet received a copy of the Help-Net flier in September, and copies are available for Parents on Reporting Day and Parents Weekend. If you would like to be listed in the 2001-2002 edition, to contribute to its printing and distribution, or to receive more information, contact the VADM Nelson Chapter here.
