Hi Larry, As you can see from my email add. the Oriskany is never far from my thoughts. I was in v2. The day of the fire was the longest day of my life. I was with Cheif Hartfild durring some of the rescue attempts. He and a few ot6her of my shipmates blocked off part of a passageway with some boards so that we could bail the water off a deck hatch to try to save some of the crew trapped below. I went into the PIO and found several casualties one of them was a good friend Greg Hart.

Larry, It is so great to watch this web site grow. I just spent a few minutes looking through your guestbook. It is incredible how many ex "Mighty O" sailors are out there surfing the web. I keep going back to your web site and to mine and to Stan Hawkin's s te...and all the other Oriskany web sites there are now. I remember getting off of a bus and walking onto that pier at NAS Alameda as a young, 19 year old RMSN fresh out of RM A school. It was June 6, 1967.. 1 day shor of a year after I graduated from hig school. A few weeks ago I went aboard the USS Hornet museum with my 6 year old grandson at that same pier. Amazing feeling...amazing emotions.. hard to describe. So many great memories. Keep up the good work Larry. Help us keep the memories alive. Wayne Neighbors

I had requested a PBR when I got out of "ET A" School. In the long run the the "mighty O" was a better bet.I served on the "O" boat from Nov 69 to Sept 71.I was an ETN3 in OE Division.I took care of the radio transmitters in the transmitter room located un er the starboard cat. That was in the part of the ship that got burnt up in the 67 fire. When the planes launched they would rattle everything up front. That really kept things jumping. It was a miracle that we could talk to anyone anywhere. My time on the Ori kany was a timeframe that I will never forget. Great website....keep the updates coming.Does anybody know the were abouts of ETR2 Jeff Webster of Altoona PA.

Does anybody know the wherabouts of Jerry bowers, Don steinkirchner, Don Hilts, Walt werremeyer,Bob Lea,Tom Brink, or Robert Abramson? I have scanned in several photos from the 1971 cruise book and am willing to send crew photos to interested fellow shipmates. I did connect up with Troy Morse from the machine shop via Wayne's excellent website.

Great information! Thanks for all of your hard work gathering material and keeping the Oriskany's memory alive. My dad was the 44th fatality of the October '66 fire. His name is Cdr. H.W. (Bill) Juntilla. He was head of CIC on his 3rd and final cruise to VietNam. It was supose to be his last . . . I was 13 and have fond memories of being on board of the carrier and even had the pleasure of going on a family day cruise! I still have bits of memory of that fun day. I remember his room, the copper sink the little port hole. I had dinner in the dining room one night when the ship was anchored at Coronado and my dad was left in charge. We had linen table cloths, great food and excellent service and even a movie! I am so proud of my dear dad and the Na y and all of you who served our country! God Bless you. Signed, A Proud Daughter Mary Juntilla Pasley

Interesting that you noted on your 1966 cruise record that KRIS TV was inaugurated on that cruise. I did an afternoon radio show on KRIS RADIO in 1972-73. Glad to know that there are still a few of us with fond memories of our old temporary home. Sorry to see that she is now rusting away at Mare Island! Take care and keep in touch....

I went aboard the Big "O" in Feb '56 as a snipe right of boot camp at San Diego and left it Dec 56 while it was in San Francisco ship yards. I left as a MM3 when the navy was cutting short time in rank to be rated. My assignment was in the reefer gang of division and Pop Dunchan the last of the original plank owners was in A division. When I left the Oriskany I went back to Alameda and served aboard the Yorktown CVA10 also in the reefer gang.

I have enjoyed all the information about the Oriskany on yours web site and also on Waynes. In the past two and half months I've read everything. Some of the names of the crew members has made me pull out my Oriskany 66 Cruse Book. I found 17 names tha was aboard at the same time I was, and I've found the division and pictures of 12. After looking at the pictures over and over it looks like I'm sitting and check off names in the pay line. I was aboard the Oriskany from May 1966 to Sept. 1968 as a Di bursing Clerk (S-4) division. My address is 200 Mathews Blvd., Lafayette, La. 70508 - phone (318) 981-1246. Great page Larry keep it up.

I picked up the ship in Subic Bay, Phillipines around the 25th of June 1966. The ship had just returned from Yokosuka, Japan. I was really nervous to go on board. Oriskany was a big ship and I didn't realize just how big it was until I walked up to the g ng plank. I was assigned to V1 division in the flight deck fly 2 area. Later I was re-assigned to the flight deck fly 1 area during the 67 Westpac cruise. I built a coffee counter in our coffee locker at fly 1 out of ammunition crates. Also I made a huge short timers calendar that we hung up on the wall in our coffee locker so that the guys could mark their discharge dates and count the days off. I worked with Benge, Reggie, Ron Leeson, Noel Hartford,Charlie Stricland, Jerry Curtis and so many others that I can not remember all their names. I was attached to the Oriskany until May 6, 1968, when I was honorably discharged at Treasure Island. I would enjoy email from any one assigned to the oriskany. Thanks, Larry Lefoy
