Bring on the Aircraft!
A team from the 94th Combat Engineer Battalion (Heavy) and Brown and Root Services completed an estimated 2 weeks' work in only 2 days at Camp Bondsteel. This horizontal construction involved site preparation and laying AM-2 matting for the aircraft landing zone. Helicopters can now land at the new site and additional landing pads will be placed every day until the end state is achieved. The project was part of the continuing emphasis to finish horizontal work critical to supporting winter operations. The ability to deploy helicopters from Kosovo will enhance mission readiness over having all aircraft based at Camp Able Sentry in Macedonia. After the safety office at U.S. Army, Europe makes a final flight line inspection, the landing zone will be open for business. An adjacent clamshell maintenance facility can accommodate up to four Apaches at once. Complete aircraft support facilities, all temporary construction, will be added in the coming months.

Well Drilling Continues

Contractors have started drilling well #7 at Camp Bondsteel, having abandoned the site of well #6. After drilling down to 180 feet, well #6 had not produced water; then the drill shaft broke in the ground. Repeated attempts to retrieve the equipment were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, two working wells drilled at Bondsteel are now producing potable water. Engineers installed reverse-osmosis water purification units (ROWPUs), which are field-portable treatment systems. ROWPUs generate some wastewater, which can be recycled for nonpotable uses such as dust control, vehicle cleaning, and irrigation. Brown and Root Services also has started drilling for water at Camp Monteith.
