Wind Beneath My Wings

After the ground war started, half the unit was sent into Iraq along with an American Ambulance Unit and a British Ambulance Unit to look for the main infantry unit. The units got lost and wandered around for a couple of days. On February 28, 1991, while parked and giving aid to some Iraqi POW's who were surrendering to them there was an explosion in a Chevy Blazer at the end of the convoy.

At the sound of the explosion, Cindy dove out of her truck and took up a position in the sand with her M16. At that point there was a second explosion where Cindy was laying in the sand, mortally wounding her. Although still alive, Cindy had received major trauma. Major Haun, her commander, radioed for a dustoff but it couldn't take off at that time due to a sand storm. The Major moved the unit and radioed new coordinates for the dustoff, but for some reasons the med-evac (dustoff) went to the first coordinates where it was fired upon by an Iraqi APC. After Cindy was finally loaded on to the dustoff, she died on the way to the M.A.S.H. Unit.

Nine months later after an Army C.I.D. investigation, Cindy's status was changed from KIA to non-combat fatality, stating she died from a souvenir M42 bomblet.

Purple Heart in Shadow box      After a two year, hard fought campaign by her family, friends, Community, Ct. Rolling Flags, Inc., and many others including Senator Christopher Dodd, her status was changed back to KIA and was award the Purple Heart posthumously.

She didn't have to go to Saudi because of back problems but wouldn't shirk her duties. She was told she didn't have to go into Iraq, but again wouldn't shirk her duty. In all our eyes, Cindy is the definition of "Hero".

That is why Cindy Marie Beaudoin will always be
"Connecticut's Angel In The Sand"

Angel In The Sand
by Bobby Easton "92"

She was just out of high school when she answered the call,
To stand up for her country, over in the Gulf.
She was as pretty as a picture, and as gentle as a lamb,
Yet she made the ultimate sacrifice, she died for Uncle Sam.

On February Twenty Eighth, Nineteen Ninety One,
Her convoy was ambushed beneath that hot Iraqi sun.
She never knew what struck her, that blow from a tyrant's hand,
Now her laughters just an echo, from an Angel In The Sand.

Sweet Angel In The Sand, looking down from above,
You can see how much your missed, you can feel how much your loved.
Together we shall stand our ground 'til justice is at hand,
'Cause you'll always be our hero, Sweet Angel In The Sand.

Cindy, Our Dear Sweet Cindy, you did not die in vain,
For now you guard the streets of Heaven 'til we all shall meet again.
God will be your new Commander as you take your heavenly stand,
To watch o'r your friends and family 'til they reach The Promise Land.

Sweet Angel In The Sand, looking down from above,
You can see how much your missed, can feel how much your loved.
Yes together we all shall stand our ground, 'til justice is at hand.
So as we bid adieu, may God bless you, Sweet Angel In The Sand.

God Bless You Cindy!
