RNZAF Lockheed P3K Orion


NO. 5 SQUADRON Roles: Long-range maritime air operations including anti-submarine warfare training, fisheries resource surveillance, SAR, emergency medical air transport and support of Skyhawk deployments and anti-shipping operations. The Squadron primarily operates in an area from the Equator to the Antarctic.

Maintains: six Lockheed P-3K Orion aircraft, five of which entered RNZAF service in 1966 and a sixth was purchased second hand in 1985. An Orion can carry homing torpedoes, mines and missiles and has a crew of 11. All six Orions underwent phase one of an avionics update in the mid eighties.
