French Forces Report

The 1997 Old Fort MacArthur Days proved to be another fine event. I want to welcome Jason Kauffin, the one 369th New York "Harlem Hellfighter" who will be serving with the 21st on detached duty. As most of you know, the US Colored soldiers were briagaded into the French Army.

We pulled off four successful skirmishes, two on each day. By the standards that most of us are used to, they were nothing , but the public enjoyed seeing something different for a change. I think people are sick of Civil War. What was particualr spectacular was the sudden appearance of Bill Leur's 1917 motor car. I heard many spectators give us high praise and as usual, the musuem folks continue to stroke us with their praises. We are happy to have a public site to call home and they are happy to have such an easy going, anti-political, fun loving attitude with them. The only negative thing about the skirmishes was the total lack of unit and teamwork on the Allied side. As the French commander I do take responsibility for this and will not let it happen again. We suffered gravely for this on the last battle. The plan was for us to lead a patrol as skirmishers with the doughboys and Canadians and their motor car in support. As soon as the Huns fired on us, we took massive casialties and the doughboys seem to panic. The Canucks held the line while the doughboys tried to rally with the appearance of the car, but precious time was lost as two Hun squad advanced on the surviving Allies and fainlly overwhelmed them. The nice thing about this skirmish is that, unlike Civil War, poor Allied communication and lack of experience, cause what was supposed to be a planned scenarios go wrong. This is what sets GReat WAr re-enacting apart from others and this is why I like it.
