It all began on the pre-independence period of Indonesia around 1940's. The ancestor was Tentara Pelajar or Student Army. The personels were from elementry school to college level, recruited themselves by their own will. During war, they were integrated in regular army units, and did all tasks with same risks. There are no certain data about how many died nor their graves.
The next period is around 1950's to 1960's, where they were mobilized as the one forces in confrontation with a neighbor country. This time, the personels were from colleges and had prepared by military training. The name was Wajib Latih Mahasiswa (Walawa) or Reserve's Students Trained, which mainly established in Jawa island. It was the time of the born of the first regiment, that was Resimen Mahasiswa Mahawarman on province West Jawa, in 1963. The home base of the oldest units was in Sekolah Tinggi Teknik Bandung, which is known later as Institut Teknologi Bandung.
