I used to be part of a group at Texas A&M called the "Recon Company". We "trained" to be Recon Marines, and we thought at the time we were on the right track. Well, that was 5 years ago, and after dropping out of school and enlisting, believe me when i ay that you guys have a lot to learn about being a Ranger. I thought i knew about recon training- i just finished s/s indoc and am about to start scout/sniper school in the Corps and it will be nothing like what our "advisors" were teaching us. Judging b your photos, one well-placed mortar round and your whole patrol is history. Get a hold of the Ranger Handbook like all the REAL Rangers are telling you to. I don't mean to be condescending; having the motivation to do anything at all is the beginning- ow take it to the next level with ALOT more PT, running, and class room time.And one last thing- Listen to your NCO's when you get in the field!!!!!!!!! Semper Fi, Do or Die..... You can run, but you'll only die tired.....

There are many of us out here who graduated from UA and were part of the beginnings of this organization. Keep the training hard and challenging. I learned more in Ranger Company and Ranger Challenge than in the ROTC program. It has potential to develo good officers. Remember, your real training will come from your NCO's when you get on the ground.

Iam an officer currently teaching ROTC in the midwest; I will be forwarding this page to Cadet Command with the hopes of shutting not only this page down but your "bama Rangers" down as well. Your use of REGULAR ARMY rank, improper wear of the BDU uniform BLACK T SHIRTS?) and using the word "RANGER" is such a loose form shows a great lack of structure for you "children" it takes 62 god damn days (without nogoes) to earn that TAB and none of you have ever set foot at RTB. After receiving your first platoon keep in mind that you work for your soldiers. If you bear that in mind then they will produce ten-fold. Take care of them, know their families, know what they like and dislike, learn to motivate (yelling to get your wa or pulling rank is for sissy's). You don't have to be a PT king but you had better be able to out perform 3/4 of the platoon. Your soldiers will subtley challenge you in this area just to see what your made of. For the first two weeks in the platoon, o nothing but follow that platoon sgt and squad leaders, they have the experience, you have a college education. Don't make drastic changes right away, just sit back, watch, listen and learn. Don't be afraid to ask for suggestions, the men respect that ou will listen to them, rest assured that you have the final decision authority within that platoon. I've met some Privates and Specialists that have great plans to accomplish missions. Bottom line is to enjoy yourself, be yourself, work hard and play h rd. Work can be intense but it can also be fun, it has to be. If you have any other questions give me a call at 573-341-6808.

Heres the deal guys, I graduated highschool in 1994 and spent a year in college ROTC. When I enlisted into the Army I thought I knew what I was getting into. My Brother was a Ranger and had told me all the stories so I had alot of inspiration just like ll of you. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with wanting to go to all of the highspeed schools. what bothers me is the similarities you all give yourselves towards Rangers. Being a Ranger is something that takes hard work and it almost offends me that you all use the word so loosely. I looked at your patrol pictures and just from the pictures saw flaws in your techniques, spacing, security etc...I hope you all have the chance to go to Ranger school and learn that Ranger Challenge (That I was i when I went to colloge)Is easy compared to the real deal at FT. As someone who works with a number of Ranger and Special Forces qualified soldiers, I am actually very disappointed with your ROTC "Ranger Challenge" Team site. You have not yet earned the right to refer to yourselves as anything other than cadets (i.e. adet LTC, not LTC), and you certianly have not earned the right to call yourselves "RANGERS" You are involved in ROTC Ranger Challenge - AND THAT IS IT. I strongly recommend changing some of the wording used on this site. Other than that..very 'nice'.

Stumbled on your page while reserching something else and thought I would drop by. I was a member of the Rutgers Rangers when I was an ROTC cadet back in '66. We were the second unit of this type in the country. I was begining to think this philosophy o ROTC training was gone. I am glad to see that some young men (and women, I imagine now) still think that military training has a place in college. I got more out of the Rutgers Rangers that I use now, 33 years later in my job as a computer programmer t an in all my other undergraduate courses. Keep at it!

OK, guys: I was an ROTC cadet, too. (and also 1st ranger battalion for four years and an armor officer for five) One thing that really made ROTC a BAD experience was young men who thought they were better than others just because they did "ranger challen e", or because they belonged to some "ranger club". You should understand that in the Army, much importance is placed upon how "seasoned" one is. My general impression is that you guys are not seasoned at all. Therefore, mellow out on the gung-ho attitu es, and place a premium on trying to learn as much as you can. An attitude of humility might help. I suggest that you go to "Ranger Joe's" near Fort Benning (I'm sure you know the place), and pick up an old copy of the Army's "dismounted patrolling" manua . That is the best source available on the subject. (That's right...get rid of your "ranger handbook". It's just not that good of a resource) Study it hard if you want to become more informed on patrolling. Rangers are supposed to be quietly confident in their knowledge and in their professionalism. If you don't portray yourself in that way, then you are just a bunch of fluff with a big mouth. I suppose I could put you guys down like some of the others in this guestbook (yeah, you infantry officers inclu ed), but it doesn't take much brains to do that, now does it. The bottom line is that if you are a true professional, you don't have to spout off your big mouth telling everyone--- everyone will already know it, and so will you. Oh, and to that brand new shavetail infantry officer below with the potty mouth: Nice going slick. You really represented your branch well. Howdy, I'm the Commanding Officer of the Rudder's Rangers Company in the Corps of Cadets here at Texas A&M University. Our company is named in honor of General James Earl Rudder '32. Col. Rudder led the 2nd Ranger Batt up the cliffs of Pointe de Hauc on D-Day. Nice page! There's a tough crowd out there according to some of those comments. Remember, uphold the prestige, honor, and high espirit de corps of the Rangers. Before you know it we'll have that tab(?scroll?)on our shoulder. Our organizations eem to be quite similar, with a few exceptions. We PT Mon/Wed at 0600 and Tue/Fri at 0500, meet Mondays at 1900 for classroom instruction for about 90 min., and have an outdoor lab Wednesdays at 1700 for 90 min as well. We attend 7 36hour FTX's througho t the year and a 7 day exercise at Fort Hood over the X-MAS break (Jan 11-17). E-mail me and I'll send some info. Nice, not thrilling, though. I went thru RIP in June 97 at Ft. Benning. I am currently stationed at A co.(Alphatraz) 2/75 Rgr Regt. The things you people are doing here sound fun, but it is definitley what we do in the Regiment. For one thing you all use Ranger" a little too much. Your not. A tab on your shoulder does not make you a Ranger. We have a saying "the tab is a school, the scroll a way of life". I know some people who come headhunting if they saw this page. Plus, your all probably dirty, filthy, nasty legs. 5 jump chumps does not count. If you have done a ramp jump off a C-130 over an airfield at 0200 hrs, 800 ft AGL, with a full combat load, then you will have an idea of what Rangering is all about. Anyway, I gotta go finish packing for Ranger S hool. I leave this Saturday. Happy Thanksgiving!

It's a good page, but I find that some of your training methods are completely useless. Having an E&E ex for only 1-2 hours teaches you nothing but how to play hide-and-seek. Most E&E ex's that I've been involved in (both being the hunter and the hunted have gone on for days at a time. Try to operate such as you do on practically no sleep, no food and having dozens, if not hundreds of people looking for you. Another of your training aids that I find to be not so helpful is that of the paint guns. A p int pellet can shoot max. 100m whereas a 5.56mm round can be shot at an effective range of 500-600m. And a 7.62 can go farther. These distances must be taken into account when planning a recce or fighting patrol. I applaud you guys for taking the initia ive to set something like this up for yourselves, but if you truly want to train like part of the military, especially an organization such as the Rangers, than you have to try and train like them. This will not only make it more beneficial to you if you join the Rangers but it is more of a challenge as well. Please don't take what I've said the wrong way, I'm trying to help you. I hope all of you achieve your goals.

Good start, But you need to explain what you mean by "LIVE FIRE"! Don't give your readers the impression that you have live bullets comming at you, or that you participate in real combat. How many of your graduates actually continue on to earn the real ta ? On your Radios that you are so proud of, hate to tell you this, but those things work ok in training, but nothing works that way in real combat. They are subject to the weather, hills and other things that you can't immagine. I know we tried them in com at . bout the only thing they are good for is close work and line of sight.Don't get this wrong,I realize you guys are in college, and this is ment to be constructive. Emphasize more on what it actually takes to become an actual Army Ranger! We DO have me from the Special Forces, Navy SEALS and the Marine Force Recon who go thru Ranger School Also. It is not easy trainning,nor does it mean when you finish Ranger School you will actually be assigned to a Ranger unit. On the average, only 1 in 3 Graduate fr m Ranger School. Good training ideas. You guys are keeping up with the Ranger tradition. However, I notice that you make a lot of mention of the firefights and killing. Which is HOOAH, until you have been there. I am ranger through and through. I will never forget my fall n comrades, ever. But you still have no mention of anytype of medical training. Teach your soldiers a little more than basic first aid, and they will feel responsibility all at once. It is more difficult to save a life than it is to take one.
