* The history of the Triton is rather unique. The original design was primarily Rickover's concept of having a submarine with twice the horsepower of the earlier reactors. Hence the development of the multiple reactor propulsion system. The Triton was the first submarine that could go faster than most surface ships. The question was raised as to how to employ this submarine because of its high surface speed, and the fact that Triton was too large and lacked the maneuverability to be an effective submarine. Thus the mission of the submarine was designated as a radar picket submarine (the "R" stands for the radar picket). This concept was developed in 1945 when suicide planes from Japan smashed into the destroyers that were used as pickets to warn the carriers of the impending danger. Except now those pickets could submerge as the Triton.
