HARUSHIO
In the mid-1960s, the Japanese Navy launched a program that called for the construction of four submarines, one of which became the Harushio.

SS 563
The Harushio (SS 563) can cruise at 14 knots (25.93 km/h) surfaced and 18 knots (33.34 km/h) submerged. She is propelled by two Kawaski diesels and two electric motors. Her armament includes eight 21-inch (533-mm) torpedo tubes (six forward and two aft).

A Short Career
The Asashio, Mochishio, Arashio, and Harushio, all built in Kobe and having an average displacement of 1,650 tons, were modeled after the Ooshio, which was built as part of a 1961 program. The de-commissioning of Ooshio class ships began in 1982. Harushio, built by the Kawasaki shipyards, was laid down in October 1965, launched less than two years later on February 25, 1967, and commissioned on December 1, 1967. After a relatively short career, the Harushio was disarmed in 1985.
