The ships seal is representative of USS
LONG BEACH's mission summarizing
it in the motto "Strike Hard, Strike
Home." This capability of USS
LONG BEACH to "Strike
Hard, Strike Home" with her missile systems was symbolized in the
seal by the tripple tridents. The missile systems were designed to
operate offe- nsively against land, air, surface,
and sub-surface threats, making USS LONG
BEACH a powerful battle
force combatant.
Nuclear power is represented in the seal by the sun.
Combining this striking
ability with the advantage of nuclear power for propulsion
further increases her
effectiveness, by allowing virtually unlimited cruising
range.
The anchor-carrying eagle represents the sea power possesses
by USS LONG
BEACH, one of the most powerful
ships in the surface fleet.
The final symbol, the sea shell is taken from the seal
of the City of Long
Beach, California, for which the ship was named.
It symbolizes all the qualities of
adventure inherent in a sailor's life. The Navy's mission
of strength, combined with nuclear propulsion and the most advanced missile
systems, was ideally represented
by USS LONG BEACH.
