Jon
entered the Navy in 1977 and, after boot camp, headed off for Chanute AFB
(can you believe it? The Cornfield Navy) for training as a weather observer.
After three years stationed at the Naval Weather Service Environmental
Detachment (now Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Detachment) in Kingsville
Texas, he returned to Chanute AFB for further training, this time as a
weather forecaster. He then transferred to Naval Oceanographic Command
Center, Guam where he stayed until his EAOS. After a brief time spent
as a civilian, Jon returned to the Navy and was stationed on the Mobile
Environmental Team in Rota, Spain. In 1988, he transferred to the
Naval Oceanography Command Detachment in Corpus Christi, Texas. It
was there he met Jill...
Jill entered the Navy in 1986 and also trained
as a weather observer at Chanute AFB. Her first tour was spent at
(the now closed) Naval Oceanography Command Facility Cubi Point, Philippines.
Not quite ready for forecasting school, she took orders to the Naval Oceanography
Command Detachment in Corpus Christi, Texas. And there, she met Jon...
Jon and Jill met in March of 1989, were engaged
in June, and married in September. Unfortunately, Jon still owed
two years sea duty and was up for orders. The detailer hooked him
right up (???) with a one year set of orders to (the now also closed) Naval
Support for Antarctica that counted as double sea duty. But, when
the year was over, he was able to return to NOCD Corpus Christi.
By 1993, it was time for Jill to go to forecasting school, so, while Jon
remained in Corpus, she transferred to the Naval
Technical Training Unit at Keesler
AFB (The Cajun Navy)
.
The only place available when Jon and Jill came up
for their next set of orders was at Yokosuka
Japan.
Jon was stationed on board the USS Independence
and Jill was stationed at the Naval
Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography Facility.
While they were in Yokosuka, both Jon and Jill were
selected for Chief Petty
Officer, an important milestone in their military career.
Then
they received orders to the Naval
Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography Center West, Guam. They
enjoyed their two years in the tropical sun, and even tried to extend to
the closing of the Center, as it moved to Yokosuka, Japan. But when
December came, they were on their way to Mississippi.
And that's where we are now. Jill is an
instructor for forecasting school at NTTU
on Keesler AFB
and Jon works at the Naval
Oceanographic Office on Stennis Space Center.
