APPLE PIES

 Sharon ([email protected]))

She was driving a Lexus GX through a rustling wind along the highway high in the mountains east of San Diego. She was headed for Julian, for the apple days. It was a beautiful fall morning. She was just tooling along, minding her own business, when suddenly around a bend in the road she had to slam on her brakes.

There was a stalled vehicle in front of her. She barely was able to stop without crashing into it. But she managed to pull to a stop and over to the side of the road. She climbed out of her car and went up to see what the problem was.

A very distinguished looking man was peering under the hood of his car, trying to determine what was wrong and still not to dirty his suit. She could see instantly what was wrong. A large puddle of oil under the car, made it clear that the oil pump had failed. She told him so and offered to help him push the car out of the road and a ride to the nearest service station. And they did just that. The nearest service station was in Julian and the crowds there were tremendous as they always are for the Apple day festival. She left him at the station and found a place further up to park. She didn't expect to see him again.

She pushed her way through the crowds, and managed to get to the apple pie shop. She went to the rear of the shop, hoping to avoid the long line. There she saw her distinguished man entering the back door. He saw her and asked her how he could help her. She told him she needed a Dutch apple pie for her Grandmother. He laughed and asked her why she picked such a busy day to come for pie. She explained that her grandmother was dying and before she died, she wanted some Julian apple pie. He explained that his sister owned the shop and He brought her out two very warm pies, just out of the oven and refused payment for them. Then he asked for her phone number. She obliged and headed back to her car with her warm pies, to the glares of people who had been standing in line for an hour.

She didn't know then, that a romance had started. But That night she received her first call from her distinguished gentleman.
