Introduction: Who are "The Movie Kittens"?

Presenting ...

"Baby" or "Bringing Up Baby" (a.k.a., Katharine Hepburn)"Baby" or "Bringing Up Baby" (a.k.a., Katharine Hepburn's pet leopard, Baby) formerly known as "1 of 5"

Black and White, Female. She along with "Annie Hall" are the smallest kittens. She is very feisty and would make Katharine Hepburn proud.

Anthony, "Tony", Wilson with Rebel and Baby. 8-5-98Meet Baby and Rebel's adopted father, Anthony, "Tony," Wilson. Here is a photo taken on August 5, 1998 of Tony with Baby (on the right and listed above) and  Rebel (on the left and listed below) .

"Rebel" or "Rebel Without A Cause" (a.k.a., James Dean)"Rebel" or "Rebel Without A Cause" (a.k.a., James Dean) formerly known as "2 of 5"

Black and White, the only Male. He is the largest kitten. He is also the friendliest and most confident of the litter. He likes to drag race... note that "adrenaline rush" in his eyes from one too many races. He calls it concentration.

"Annie" or "Annie Hall" (a.k.a., Diane Keaton) along with "Rebel Without A Cause" in the background."Annie" or "Annie Hall" (a.k.a., Diane Keaton) formerly known as "3 of 5" along with "Rebel Without A Cause" in the background.

Solid Black, Female. She along with "The African Queen" are the shyest of the kittens. "Annie" is a "sweetie" and maybe it is her Diane Keaton "spaciness" that causes her to sit back and watch what is going on rather than participating in everything... la de da, la de da, la la la. She is destined to have her own line of clothes.

I've decided to adopt her myself.

"Queen" or "The African Queen" (a.k.a., Katharine Hepburn #2)"Queen" or "The African Queen" (a.k.a., the boat in the movie) formerly known as "4 of 5"

Solid Black, Female. While she is shy, she is warming up very quickly to me. She will indeed become the spinster Hepburn after her next visit to the vet to be spade.

I've decided to adopt her myself.

"Lady" or "My Fair Lady" (a.k.a., Audrey Hepburn) "Lady" or "My Fair Lady" (a.k.a., Audrey Hepburn) formerly known as "5 of 5"

Black and White, Female. Her personality is very similar to "Baby's", that is, they are both full of energy and love to "rip and roar". They give "Rebel" a "run for his money." In the movie as Eliza Doolittle, she "cleans up nice" but was disappointment that her voice was "dubbed over" in the singing scenes. She will need a little experience and maturity before she can become a "proper" lady. She will probably have me singing "I grown accustomed to your face ..." when it comes time to turn her over to her adoptive parents.

I've decided to adopt her myself.

I decided to named them after five of AFI's, American Film Institute's Top 100 Movies.

What are they doing in a place like this? I am trying to find them loving, kind, competent adoption parents for these darling kittens, as well as highlight the need for "no kill" animal shelters.

Every Saturday cats and kittens will be available for adoption at Feeders Supply at 3079 Breckenridge Lane (and Hikes Lane), from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.. This adoption event is sponsored by The Shamrock Foundation. See a list of regional (Kentucky and Southern Indiana) Animal Shelters and Rescue Organizations, below.

Rescue of "The Movie Kittens" and their lives since ...

Read about their lives since being rescued and the lessons that I am learning from this ordeal, I mean opportunity (smile). I will chronicle their daily lives and the impact of this opportunity on me, their foster parent.

Day 1 - July 2, 1998

Where did they come from?

I was walking my dog, Apollo, at a local middle school when I heard small cries from several small kittens in a tree about ten feet off the ground. They were acting like they could not get down. I quickly walked home and put my dog inside the house. I loaded up my car with a step ladder, bowls of food and water, and a box (with holes cut in it to allow them to breathe).
I drove to the school to rescue the kittens.

I could barely reach them but managed to get them all out of the tree. The shyest kitten, "Queen" or was it "Annie" was a little higher than the other kittens. She wanted to get down so she reluctantly climbed down to where I could pick her up.

I was struck almost instantly with the fear that I would turn out to be like my Aunt Jan who apparently enjoys living alone except for her kittens and cats. No offense is intended to my Aunt Jan but I fear that there is some sort of "save stray animals" gene that runs in our family. See the story about her below: "Bogalusa's 'Kitty Lady' need of financial aid: Jan Applewhite takes in stray cats; vets assist project".

BTW (By the way), my friend and neighbor, Rick, commented the other day that he was thinking about starting a "betting pool". He thinks that I'll end up with three of the five kittens. I reluctantly named them so I hope that doesn't mean that I'll end up with all five. September 19, 1998 update: My neighbor would have won his bet because I've decided to keep the three remaining kittens. I might could part with them if someone really, really wanted them and would provide them with a great home.

Question: What have I learned from all this???

Answer: It is hard to rescue animals and keep them for a couple of months and then give them up!!! Of course, I really could not keep them all as it would not be fair to them because I could not possibly give them all the attention they need and deserve. I would do it all over again if I had to because they have enriched my life. You can't have a bad day around cats because they make you laugh so much and they seem to know just when you need a little attention of your own. Dogs are great too. They make you gets a little exercise to boot!

"Tony" has kept me up-to-date on "Rebel" and "Baby". He says that they are doing fine and are the playing in the bathroom sink a lot.  He has renamed them "Jack" and "Emily". See Jack and Emily's web page.

Here is a brief newspaper article about my Aunt Jan who lives in Bogalusa, Louisiana:

The Bogalusa Daily News

The Bogalusa Daily News - EDITORIAL (September 7, 1994)

Bogalusa's 'Kitty Lady' need of financial aid:
Jan Applewhite takes in stray cats; vets assist project

Not often enough, when government fails to get a job done, good people step to the front.

Here at home, a special case in point is Jan Applewhite, who could well and proudly live up to the title of "Kitty Lady" of Bogalusa.

Stray cats are not something many people want to be bothered with. Too many have been poisoned or dropped off in the woods.

But Jan Applewhite takes them in and feeds and cares for them. She takes them to local veterinarians who themselves help her in her efforts to get the cats placed in homes where they are wanted.

This coming Friday and Saturday there will be a yard sale of a different kind. The public is being asked to make a donation of things that can be sold at the yard sale. The yard sale will be held at 1610 Main Street.

Half of the selling price will go to the persons donating the items and half will be used to keep the stray cat program going. Cash donations may also be sent to the four vets who are helping Ms. Applewhite - Dr. Kim Griffin, Dr. James Hernandez, Dr. Steve Stafford and Dr. R. L. Rollins.

The "Kitty Lady. emphasized that none of the cats she picks up or gets is put to sleep. She will get them spayed or neutered by the vets and then finds willing people to take them as pets.

It is a wonderfully humane program put together by a lady who cares and by some local veterinarians who also care enough to give her a helping hand.

The City of Bogalusa has a dog pound, but has no facilities to take In stray cats. And besides, Ms. Applewhite's program is aimed at placing the animals as pets, not at reducing the population through having them killed.

Be a helping hand yourself. Take part in the yard sale this Friday and Saturday. Give Ms. Applewhite a phone call today at (504) 732-2463.
