(Left) Bird setting Skeeter, (Laura's parakeet) and our feeding of the
birds, has convinced us that we could have been "bird people"
as easy as "cat people". The plastic container in the background
was our "birdbath" for these lovely Bard Doves. We enjoyed
feeding these little guys on our lanai. Pat even had a couple set in her
hand as they eat. The Bard Dove is also called a Zebra Dove and was
imported from Australia. They are just a bit smaller and more delicate than
the Morning Dove.

(Right) Here Pat is hugging a Rainbow Eucalyptus, it too was imported. One local wag said "Anything that's beautiful in Hawaii has to be imported." An overstatement I'm sure, but much of what catches the eye turns out to not be indigenous. These ARE beautiful, they are very tall, 80 ft or more and the trunk is smooth with this multi colored green and pastel color bark. They however are considered a "trash" tree for the bark sheds in long narrow strips and clutters the ground everywhere the trees are present.
(Left) Here some good-looking fellow, (Me) is enjoying the surf
at Barking Sands Beach. Too dangerous for me to swim in, but great
to cool off and splash around in. Riptides and undertow are the problem
here. Fantastic sand.
(Right) Everywhere you look, Hawaii has stunning color . I worked hard
to avoid flower photos, because once you start you could never stop. The
purples and red/oranges were so... vivid. Never saw a humming bird and only
one butterfly.

(Left) This should really be on the volcano page, but.. here Dave and Tracy stand in the road where the lava stopped flowing. Like an elephant, it can go where it wants!

(Right) David figured that 5miles was not too far to walk to see Green Sand Beach so off we went. I thought he was NUTs! The walk there was straight into a 25-30mph wind with a very hot sun at your back. The dirt and sand coated us quickly. Once there, you climb down the slope 80ft to the beach. The lava sand beach is truly green! The photo is not too bad on color. The surf surges here were 6ft high or more. Impressive. I still think Dave was nuts, even though we survived :>)

(Left) This was our resort on Kauai. The Aston Beach Boy. Very nice quiet spot. There is a down side, while we were there, they started remodeling/ modifying the facility to time share units. Grounds and everything will be totally redone :>((

(Right) The Hotel in Kona was much different. Six story twin towers, doormen, marble, you get the idea. This was part of the view off our lanai. I cropped out the cruise ship, swimming pool, bar, and roof of the common facilities between the two towers. Nice and modern but hundreds of people, the majority, Japanese couples, young or old, few between. The "beach" area was cut in as a boat basin for launching kayaks and outriggers. Some kids played in the protected water, but that was it.

The shadows are kind of tough, but here are the four visitors enjoying a nice stop on the northwest coast of the Big Island. Really nice beach here at Kawaihae, it's a shame that we were just traveling through.
Our Hawaiian Vacation was a wonderful start to the "Summer of 99". bdjr 6/24/99
