June 17 and June 18 : Big Island Snorkeling

David and Tracy joined us on the "Big Island" for sightseeing, visiting and snorkeling! This was a great time and the snorkeling was fantastic. We rented our snorkeling gear and bought a disposable underwater camera to go "see the fish".(Above Left) The Hawaii State fish the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. (Above Right) A Yellow Tang .

(Far Left) Dave and Tracy make adjustments of their gear before entering the water.

(Left) Our favorite spot at The City of Refuge National Park, about 20 miles south of Kona. We spent two days in this bay and enjoyed not only fish and turtles but also were blessed with a visit of about 20 Spinner Dolphins! They swam with us at times within 10ft or less.

(Above Left) These Spotted Trunkfish were fairly common and were up to perhaps 10inches or so in length.

(Above Right) You can see the variety of types of fish in this group, here feeding in the coral. Standing on end and nibbling off the coral was the favorite method, unless you are the "swallow your neighbor" type. Most of these photos were taken in 8 to 12 ft of water.

(Above Left) Green Sea Turtles were fairly common. Total, we probably saw 10 or so. They are quite large, 24inches and more with huge heads. They don't seem to be bothered by our presence. I hovered about 10 ft above this fellow for several minutes and he ignored me. They must surface every 15-30 min for air and we usually saw them swimming. Pat had no interest in the turtles and stayed at a distance when we saw one rising to the surface and then diving to a hiding spot among the coral.

(Above Right) Our fish identification card does not include this cute little guy. There weren't many of them, but much too pretty to pass up. They were alone or with a friend or two, I never saw more than 3 at any one time.

(Left) Thanks to Dave and Tracy for joining us and sharing snorkeling and our visit to the Big Island. Looks like they enjoyed giving Dad one more chance with the underwater camera.
