"A Rose By Another Name" Another in a series of one of a kind gowns to benefit the City of Angels Ballet.
Gene and the diplomatic entourage are in Paris, city of lights, of lovers, of Hemingways moveable feast. Each day brings delights to all the senses. "Parisians are the most artful of hedonists", Gene thinks and laughs out loud, which causes two of said hedonists strolling the banks of the Seine to turn and stare at the girl who is so amusing to herself. Gene gives them a ridiculous smile, and they stroll on shaking their heads. "Yes, I am delirious with something every minute of the day since the moment I arrived here. And I am drunk with freedom because none of you seem to recognize me." Gene spent the better of two days with the diplomats touring the great maisons de couture that were thriving again after the war. Monsieur Dior himself gave Gene a private showing. Naturellement, Gene made a few select purchases. With this long awaited day to herself, Gene decided to tour the left bank. She was drinking in the sights and sounds of la vie boheme when a little boutique caught her eye. In the window, exquisite laces and sumptuous fabrics of another era were artfully draped. The stores name, La Belle Epoque, was written in vintage style on the window. Gene walked in and the jangling bell called a lovely young woman out from the back room. Gene began by admiring the beautiful gowns displayed in the store, but, as happens when kindred spirits recognize each other, the young women came away with each others history and dreams.
Vivienne began her career in the House of Dior, and quickly became a premier main, but her own artistic vision intruded, so she left the great maison, and opened this little shop where she could indulge her art. She supplemented her income by supplying fabric and laces to the maisons de couture. "I belong in the past" Vivienne confided to Gene. "Perhaps my soul missed its cue", which made both of them laugh. "Your soul is right where it should be, or else I wouldnt have found you!" Gene left the shop with a gown and a lifelong friend.
"A Rose By Another Name" is a contemporary (to the fifties!) gown with a vintage silhouette. The fluid and silky rayon jacquard is scarlet with a satin leaf pattern. The decolletage is accented with a rhinestone and glass bead tassle ornament. The fitted bodice drops below the waist into a floor length skirt gathered to the back for a bustle effect with a self train. Red velvet straps accentuate Genes shoulders and lovely back. The matching wrap is of the jacquard accented with crystal rhinestones and lined with scarlet chiffon. The ends are fringed with glass beads. Gene wears a hair ornament of red velvet ribbon, rhinestones, glass beads, and red ostrich plumes pinned to her coiffure. Two bracelets of glass beads and a rhinestone are inluded. They can be worn on Genes wrists or used to secure folds in her wrap for another look. Gene carries a bag fashioned from two roses with a glass bead handle. The ensemble is completed with full length white gloves, and Kim Fishers, of the The Finishing Touch, Titanic necklace with the "ruby" heart. Doll and shoes not included. SOLD - THANK YOU Proceeds to benefit the City of Angels Ballet. More gowns to come.
