I truly enjoyed your excellent resource on TX Civil War history. I am gggranddaughter of 2nd Lt. William R. Hale , who enlisted in Co. A of 1 Battalion of Texas Sharp Shooters in Hunt Co. on April 30, 1862. He was involved in a leadership role in the sinking of the Indianola.I have a transcription of a letter he wrote home to Campbell, TX to his wife from Morton , MISS some-time thereafter. I also have a period photograph of him if you need one. His correct name was William Reece Hale and he moved to Texas from Grayson Co, VA in 1850. There were other Hale relatives, a Perkins, and a Rutherford who also fought in that company. Please correct his initial on the Co.I listing. Thank you for such accurate history on this little recognized regiment. Carole Duvall 1555 Willowbrook Lancaster TX 75134

Like your site. I am more into the historical research mode, so I appreciate your unit history. My family was split during the Civil War to the point of a name change on my dad's side of the family (Confederate). My mom's side was a surprise. All Federal, from the "Free State OF Winston" (Winston County, Alabama). Some ancestors apparently in the First Alabama Cavalry, US Volunteers. I encourage all to look into your family history, but be prepared for some surprises.
