C. Union Position on Supporting Grievances
Bonnell voiced dissatisfaction with MCCFO’s grievance process, stating that MCCFO does not appear to support the first of the faculty contractual rights (Article V.A.) or academic freedom. Bonnell questioned just what type of grievances the Union would support.  Yizze said he would not get into hypothetical situations.  Bonnell stated his impression was that the Union did not protect its members or the contract.  He stated that MCCFO does not grieve, negotiate, or strike - it is not a Union, it is a club, a retirement party organizer.  He suggested we affiliate with a union that is  stronger.  Bonnell also noted that he believed that the lack of grievances filed in the last five years was indicative of a weak union. Yizze noted that the lack of grievances in the last five years is actually a sign of strength because most faculty complaints can be resolved to the satisfaction of the faculty before a grievance is necessary. Yizze said each situation is considered on its own merits.  Romano added that if a union can provide a solution that is favorable to the faculty member without a grievance procedure, that it is generally a better solution.  Bonnell noted that he was not satisfied with the resolution of his complaint, nor was he satisfied with the way MCCFO handled the grievance.  He went on to say the only positive result received was from the Federal Court. Schmitt noted that the Senate should not be a forum for personal complaints but should rather be concerned with the good of the faculty as a whole.  Schmitt questioned Bonnell’s motives for seeking election to the Senate.

Motion by Strong that the agenda be moved to item IV.D.
Seconded by Schmitt.  The motion carried with one nay from Bonnell.
