This Family Tree Column ran from Aug. 24, 1968 to April 26, 1980 |
|||
| Started as a project for the Elkhart County Genealogical Society in 1968, this column in The Elkhart Truth newspaper in Elkhart, Indiana began as a weekly feature in the Saturday A.M. Magazine. Initially titled "Up Your Family Tree," the column got a new logo, and a new title "A leaf from the family tree" on May 25, 1974. Begun as a group group effort, by the 12th column, RoseMary McDaniel was recognized as the editor and author, while Ginny (Mrs. Bruce) Fluke received and selected the queries. Mrs. Fluke, along with 22 others, had formed Indiana's' first and only - at that time - genealogical society in November of 1967. | |||
Why the Columns are here |
|||
| These columns are a time capsule of nearly 12 years of queries, historical information, and excerpts from early Elkhart, IN newspapers, and are reprinted here to share this valuable information. The originals, on yellowing newsprint, are on the shelf at Elkhart Public Library and in the collections of local history buffs. But to make the information available on a wider scale, they have been scanned and reproduced for research by those who may never come to Elkhart, but may have ancestors who had an Elkhart connection. . | |||
The Addresses are old and may be out-of-date |
|||
| Remember, the addresses for those who submitted queries are a number of years out of date. In the old days, people rarely moved, but in today's mobile society, it is the rare person who lives at the same address for a number of years. In addition, many history buffs tend to be older and may have passed on in the nearly 20 years since this column last ran. So, if you decide to contact someone at an address from this column, don't be disappointed if you receive no response | |||

Good hunting, though - there may still be treasure here |
|||
| But there is still
interesting information here, and perhaps that bit of family history you've been searching
may turn up on these pages. The columns are divided by year, but (as yet) there is
no index by surname. The Elkhart County Genealogical Society still meets regularly and should have archives of early queries. You may contact them at:ECGS They have printed a number of volumes of cemetery records and other local history, which are available by mail order. If have a question for the author of the columns, contact her by E-mail |
