Domien de Waghemakere, son of Herman, had the honour, together with the brothers Keldermans from Mechelen, to finish the tower at the northern (front) side, in the year 1508. The cathedral in its totality was finished in 1521.
Due to severe financial problems, elevation of this part of the tower progressed very slowly.   Several architects:
Jan Tack, then Everaert; after him Herman de Waghemakere

from 1421 on, Pieter Appelmans (Jan's son),
built the choir and some
chapels, and reached the
'first gallery' of the
northern tower in 1434.

JAN APPELMANS
is known to be the 'architect' who started the construction in 1420 A.D.
Other sources name 1350 as the real beginning.
To honour the first architects, a statue was erected outside, to the right of the entrance.
