GEOCITIES COULD DO IT !
Have you ever asked yourself
how many pages hosted by Geocities
are owned now by DEAD people ???

A certain percentage of the homesteaders (we are more than one million already, aren't we) must be deceased since Geocities came to life - it's a morbid thought, I know, but it's reality - and perhaps their pages are still on the Net, thanks to GEOCITIES ... this is, unless they are removed because no updating had taken place for quite a while...

This is where I, mortal little Belgian, come up with an idea I bear in mind for some time:
Do you know Père Lachaise in Paris? For those who don't: it's the name of a cemetery where many famous and/or worthy people (Chopin f.i., but many many others) have their last resting place, and their tombs are sometimes magnificent monuments, visited by thousands of people who come to honour them every year. It's a well known place in PARIS.

Well, you get it by now? I want to know if you're interested in an area "Père Lachaise" that could be created down the Paris neighborhood, where SOME pages, that are considered as being very valuable by a great number of Geocitizens, would be kept for EVER, i.e. would never be removed (as long as Geocities exists!) ... and I'm not thinking of my own pages in the first place!

So, tell me :Feedback please... - Do you like the idea?
- Know any pages by deceased people that are worth to be kept in this sort of database? I would like to visit them.

Also, I would like you to write down some comments,
which I could send to the Geo-Leaders... thanks.
I put this idea on the Net (Geocities, Paris/9974)
on the 24th of January 1998 (and claim it as my own)
*************************************************************************
First reaction came (on February 2nd 1998) from:
Beatrice PALEK (who explains - among other things - the origin of  Valentine's Day ...)
She wrote: "I think it would be a great idea i am not sure if it is doable in geocities but i will forward your e mail to my liason leader and let him look at it..."   Thanks; that fulfills me with some expectations.

Next day, Freddy Asbjerg , a Danish actor and Webmaster who runs some great pages about Denmark, entrusts to me: "My immediate reaction was, that it seems to be a good idea, but I'm not sure that it fits into the Contents Guidelines..."

Mmm... I think that there's no offence in taking care of a very valuable database, thus also honouring the ones that created it ... I believe sponsors could be found ... after all, the number of homepages-to-be-saved a year, would only be a few hundred ... to be chosen with great care, by a special team ...

6th of Febr I got a nice one from Brazil. It said:
"Good idea! Not only for making your name (and your home page) lasting for a great amount of time (say: some centuries), but because you can put on your cybercemetery the best jewels that the Web nests. So, go ahead!  I am nothing but enthusiastic about your idea.
Cordially, José Prudêncio Pinto de Sá  (from Brazil)"

Yeah... we still got to convince the Geocities' team, don't we...

21st of Febr Kelli Marie Nickless , a 15 year old who has her own poetry pages - besides that she's a Community Leader already - writes: "Hello- I think it sounds great...send it along to my leader"

More reactions to come? I'm looking forward to them!
From Memory Lane, Père Lachaise, Paris, best regards, Bob.
