The Rubens Market

merchant1merchant2 The "Grote Markt" (Main market) of Antwerp, situated between the gorgeous 16th century renaissance townhall, the (mainly) 15th century gothic cathedral and a row of marvellous guild houses, is no longer used as a real market. EXCEPT on a few occasions, such as on the weeks before Christmas ("Kerstmarkt") and on the 15th of August, when the RUBENS MARKET is taking place.
A very important day, or even week, for Antwerp citizens and visitors from the surroundings: 15th of August is Assumption day.

For the cathedral and for the city it's the principal liturgical day of the year, dedicated to the Holy Virgin, who is the patron saint here. This week is known as the "Antwerpen Kermis" ('kermesse' in French, which means 'fair') and it's a period during which many citizens enjoy their yearly holidays, abroad or at home.

The Rubens market, held on the "Grote Markt" and on streets in its neighborhood, is one on which all kinds of articles are sold, but mainly gifts for mother: Assumption day is also 'Mothers' day ("Moederdag") in Antwerp (and far beyond too..) Thousands visit this folkloric market. Why? merchants3 Well, merchants on the Rubens market are supposed to wear clothes and hats as worn during the 17th century, when Rubens, the painter, was one of Antwerp's most famous citizens. On that day, there's a competition amongst merchants; several prizes are accorded by the municipality to those who wore the nicest, the most typical outfits on the 'Rubens market'.
