Rubens diary, April 2nd 1632, 10 A.M.

Another painting I'm working on now is a scene with a figure of the bible: Bathseba, Salomon's mother.

I represent her sitting at a fountain near the palace of king David. Part of this building with a balcony on top can be seen in the background. I like classical architecture completing some of my compositions.
Helene sat model for Bathseba. In fact, it's a nice portrait of my young wife, half naked....

Snyders came in while I was finishing a negro boy who brings the king's invitation to the young lady.
As my friend is really specialised in representing all kind of dogs, I asked him to paint one on my work. I just wanted to give him some instruction about place and position of a little dog near Bathseba's bare feet.

He'll come back next week and then paint the dog.

Note:

FRANS SNYDERS,

(1579-1657) was a pupil of Peter Breughel Junior. He often collaborated with Rubens. He was specialised in still-life, fruit , fowl, hunting scenes...
