10 Commandments Test For Candidates Although some churches do not usually write or talk about politics, there is nothing wrong with talking in general terms about what is going on and showing from the Scriptures what one should do. With that in mind, let us take a look at the 10 Commandments (which is still on the walls of the Supreme Court, and was the foundation of our Law) and see what we can learn and apply to this upcoming election. 1. No other gods—although candidates may not be Christian, are they for or against Christianity? Do their decisions agree with what a Christian should stand for and believe? 2. No graven images—(I don’t think this one is a problem). 3. Not to take God’s name in vain—most of our presidents have added the phrase, “so help me God,” to the presidential oath. Since this acknowledges God, any denial of Him later would be to take His name in vain. 4. Remember the Sabbath—a day of rest (for Protestants, it is Sunday). Will this candidate be open to letting Christians continue to worship freely on Sundays? 5. Honor your father and mother—does this candidate seem to honor the family system that God has established (children honoring parents, spouses honoring each other, etc.)? 6. Not murder—is this candidate for any form of premeditated murder? (Remember, abortion in any form is premeditated murder, regardless the circumstances.) 7. Not commit adultery—is this candidate faithful to their spouse and family? Is there a hint of unfaithfulness here? 8. Not steal—is there any accusation of criminal activity such as stealing? Is this candidate honest in his finances? 9. Not bear false witness—is this candidate honest in what they say and do? (We do realize that it is sometimes hard to determine this since almost all of the candidates’ parties claim that their opponents lie.) 10. Not to covet—does the candidate seem to want the position for just the power, prestige, and perks that go with it? Does the candidate want to be president just to be better than others? Now I know that these thoughts may not apply to any of the candidates, or they could rule out all of them. However, these are here to help guide you as you watch the campaigning and decide who to vote for on November 2nd. It is my prayer that God will let into office candidates who will be sympathetic to Christianity and will hold to Judeo-Christian morals, values, and ideas. Pastor Bill Cooper |
