*Note: In a recent update, an oral antibiotic which contains synthetic alcohol will only be permissible in certain circumstances as stated by askimam.com's Mufti Ebrahim Desai who said, "It will be permissible to consume medicine containing synthetic alcohol if it was prescribed by a professional, experienced Muslim doctor in the case of their being no other Halaal medicine to replace it" (click here to see fatwa) (see Erythromycin rating below).

Picture this... there are puss-filled bumps that envelop your face. Red and raised, they cover every inch of flesh. Needless to say, that scenario does not sound very pretty. Of course, that scenario becomes a million times worse if you experience it yourself. I have, and yes, to that extent. Many people have approached me and suggested "cures" that have included mud treatments, vitamin complexs, antibiotics, and even suggestions that I burn my acne off. After personally trying a list of halal treatments that many people have offered me, I have rated them based on price and performance. I have also took the time to compare treatments I have received in the past. Acne is a disease that affects adolescents and adults, and somewhere in this internet crazy world, I believe that there is person who will benefit from this information, Inshallah.

Product name: Dermatonic W
Company name: B.C. Cosmaceuticals, Inc.
Grade: A+
Rank: #1
Price: On sale now for US$19.95 (reg. US$28.50) per 1 oz bottle
Where it can be obtained: www.HairBackNow.com
Halal Status: Halal*

Of all the products that I have tried, Dermatonic W is definately the best. It is a product that is formulated to fight wrinkles; however, when I consulted a specialist, he told me that Dermatonic W would be able to help acne as well.

After using the product for a little more than a week on my severe, inflamed acne, my skin is almost improved greatly. In addition, the product caused no side affects nor did it irritate my sensitive skin; furthermore, the product reduced the visiblity of my acne scars, all one week's use. Because the product is formulated to fight wrinkles, my skin was feeling extra smooth. The directions state that one should massage the product into his/her face for at least to minutes. As many of you may know, regular massages increase blood circulation therby making the skin look flushed, radiant and healthy. Now the question is: what can't this product do?

*Halal Status: Does not contain any animal ingredients. It does contain synthetic alcohol in its hidden ingredients; however, according to www.AskImam.com, synthetic alcohol is halal when applied externally*. There is no alcohol in the extracts; the product is made from all natural ingredients. The hidden emulsifier in the Turmeric ingredient is halal. The product is made by a Muslim Company. Finally, the plastic used for the product is Petroleum based (a.k.a. Halal).

Product name: Organic Black Seed & Citrus Deep Cleaning Facial Wash
Company name: Sweet Sunnah
Grade: C-
Price: US$10.00 per 4 oz bottle
Where it can be obtained: www.SweetSunnah.com
Halal Status: Halal*

The cleanser carries a hefty name; however, the way it fights acne is not so impressive. I used this cleanser for 4 months straight. I never skipped a day, and I followed the instructions to a "T." My severe, inflamed acne never healed, nor did it improve. On the plus side, because the cleanser was made of all-natural ingredients, it was non-irritant and it made my skin color radiate; of couse that is not saying much, since you could not see my skin under all that acne.

*Halal status: Does not contain any animal ingredients nor does it contain any alcohol. There are no hidden ingredients; in addition, the container does not have a coating derived from animal fat. The product is made by a Muslim Company. The product wins Kosher status as well, since it does not contain any animal ingredients or alcohol

Product name: Black Seed Acne Gel Healing Skin Serum
Company name: Sweet Sunnah
Grade: C-
Price: US$14.95 per 1 oz bottle
Where it can be obtained: www.SweetSunnah.com
Halal Status: Halal*

Like Sweet Sunnah's Citrus Cleanser, this Acne Gel carries a hefty name; also like the Citrus Cleanser, it does not fight acne. I used this Gel along side the Cleanser for four months straight. I never skipped a day, and I followed the instructions to a "T." My severe, inflamed acne never healed, nor did it improve. On the plus side, because the Acne Gel was made of all-natural ingredients, it was non-irritant and it made my skin color radiate; of couse that is not saying much, since you could not see my skin under all that acne.

*Halal status: Does not contain any animal ingredients nor does it contain any alcohol. There are no hidden ingredients; in addition, the container does not have a coating derived from animal fat. Product name: Erythromycin Stearate Tablets, USP (250 mg)
I.D. Number: NDC 0074-6346-20
I.D. Code: ES and E (printed on tablet)
Company name: Abbott Laboratories
Grade: B-
Price: US$30-50 a bottle (depending on quantity of pills)
Where it can be obtained: At your pharmacy with a doctor's prescription
Halal Status: Not Halal*

When I tried this product, I was not aware of the Halal or Haram statuses of products; yet, if you look below at the Halal status of the product, you will find that Abbott Laboraties does make a Halal Erythromycin product.

Upon first using this product; I received immediate results within the first week, and my scarring diminished over the course of a few months. However, I also felt the side effects of the product including an upset stomach, stomach cramps, and having trouble breathing. The product does diminish acne; however, it should be used with a cleanser, as the product cannot exfoliate. "Use of this medication for prolonged periods or repeated periods may result in a secodry infection (e.g., oral, bladder or vaginal yeast infection" (Patient Information Sheet obtain from Madison Pine Pharmacy). My advice is to stick with something a bit more natural, such as Dermatonic W (above).

*Halal status: When I began using this product, I was unaware of the halal and haram status of ingredients; however, I did contact the company for this particular review. It contains synthetic alcohol. In a recent update, an oral antibiotic which contains synthetic alcohol will only be permissible in certain circumstances as stated by askimam.com's Mufti Ebrahim Desai who said, "It will be permissible to consume medicine containing synthetic alcohol if it was prescribed by a professional, experienced Muslim doctor in the case of their being no other Halaal medicine to replace it" (click here to see fatwa) (see Erythromycin rating below). It does contain animal ingredients including cow and pig. It is not Halal; in addition, it would not qualify for Kosher status. Abbott Laboratories does make an Erythromycin that does not contain any animal ingredients. If you contact Abbott Laboratories (1-(800)-255-5162 from 7:00 am - 5:00 pm CST) and ask them to perform a search on the Erythromycin that does not contain animal ingredients, they will tell you; they have excellent customer service. The Erythomysic product that does not contain animal ingredients is a product that is supposed to be mixed with water; it contains no animal ingredients but contains synthetic alcohol.

Product name: Acne Treatment Cream
Company name: Equate
Grade: D+
Price: US$10 per 1 oz bottle
Where it can be obtained: At select convenient and grocery stores
Halal Status: Unknown*

This is a cream that contains 10% benzoyl peroxide. It was irritant to my skin and did not work as well as the benzoyl peroxide you would be able to find at doctors' and dermatologists' offices. It caused drying and redness. In addition, when my acne disappeared, a dark brown scar would come in its place. I believe that this was probably due to the fact that my skin cannot handle products that contain chemicals.

*Halal status: When I was using this product, I was unfamiliar with halal and haram ingredients, and this is why I am unaware of the halal status of the product. You can try contacting them with your inquiries at Clay-Park Labs, Inc., Bronx, NY 10457

Quoted Fatwa (askimam.com): The alcohol used in perfumes or deodorants is normally a synthetic alcohol, which is not impure (Najis) according to the prevailing view of Imam Abu Hanifa and his followers. Therefore, the external use of this type of alcohol is not Haram. However, its oral intake is still impermissible except in the cases of necessary medication.
