Ο Ολυμπιακός έπαιξε εξαιρετικά, χωρίς φόβο και με απίστευτο πάθος στο Ολντ Τράφορντ. Στάθηκε ως ίσος προς ίση απέναντι στην Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ. Κρατούσε το 0-0 ως το 79ο λεπτό αλλά στα τελευταία 11 λεπτά λύγισε στην πίεση των Αγγλων που τελικά νίκησαν με 3-0. Το σκορ αναμφίβολα δεν ανταποκρίνεται στην εικόνα ενός αγώνα που σίγουρα ο Ολυμπιακός μπορούσε και δικαιούνταν ένα διαφορετικό αποτέλεσμα. Όμως, το γκολ του Σόλσκιερ στο 79 έδωσε πέρα από το προβάδισμα και το ψυχολογικό πλεονέκτημα στην γηπεδούχο Γιουνάιτεντ. Πλέον, ο Ολυμπιακός θα παίξει για την τρίτη θέση που οδηγεί στο κύπελλο Ουέφα κόντρα στη Λα Κορούνια την επόμενη εβδομάδα επιζητώντας παράλληλα απώλεια βαθμών της Λιλ με αντίπαλο την Μάντσεστερ. Στο άλλο ματς του ομίλου, Λα Κορούνια-Λιλ 1-1.
Ο Ολυμπιακός ξεκίνησε με πάθος και αυτοπεποίθηση το παιχνίδι. Μάλιστα στο 25ο λεπτό θα μπορούσε να ανοίξει το σκορ και να αλλάξει τα δεδομένα της αναμέτρησης. Ο Αλέξης Αλεξανδρής βρέθηκε απέναντι στον Μπαρτέζ αλλά λίγο πριν σουτάρει παρενεβλήθη ο Μπλαν διώχνοντας την μπάλα. Το ημίχρονο ολοκληρώθηκε χωρίς σκορ.
Στο δεύτερο μέρος, οι ερυθρόλευκοι μπήκαν και πάλι με πάθος για την επίτευξη ενός τέρματος. Το σουτ του Πουρσανίδη στο 51 έφυγε ελάχιστα εκατοστά άουτ ενώ δύο λεπτά αργότερα την ίδια τύχη είχε «κεραυνός» του Πατσατζόγλου. Στο 65ο λεπτό, ο Πορτογάλος Μέλο Περέιρα υπέδειξε το σημείο του πέναλτι για παράβαση του Αμανατίδη σε τάκλιν πάνω στον Φαν Νίστελροϊ. Ο Δημήτρης Ελευθερόπουλος που αγωνίστηκε τραυματίας, απέκρουσε ηρωϊκά την εσχάτη των ποινών κρατώντας το μηδέν.
Η Μάντσεστερ άνοιξε το σκορ στο 79 όταν ο Σόλσκιερ δέχθηκε ασίστ του Φαν Νίστελροϊ και πέτυχε από κοντά το 1-0. Στο 88, η Γιουνάιτεντ διπλασίασε τα τέρματά της με τον Ράιαν Γκιγκς ενώ στις καθυστερήσεις χρίστηκε σκόρερ και ο Φαν Νίστελροϊ γράφοντας το τελικό 3-0. Κι αν η Μάντσεστερ έχασε τις ευκαιρίες, ο Ολυμπιακός σίγουρα δικαιούνταν κάτι περισσότερο, από ένα παιχνίδι που δέχτηκε το πρώτο γκολ μετά από σχεδόν 80 λεπτά.

I
told you not to panic despite the shock defeat against Bolton and that
a win tonight against Olympiakos would put everything right.
And that's exactly how it has worked out with an impressive 3-0 victory
over the Greeks here at Old Trafford putting United through to the next
stage of the Champions League with next week's game in Lille to spare.
Ferguson said after the defeats against Deportivo and Bolton that sometimes
you have to look behind disappointing results and examine the quality
of performance. On that score he declared he was satisfied and that if
they reached the same level of play minus the mistakes that they had shown
against the Spanish champions they would qualify for the next group stage.
In the first half you perhaps wondered if the manager had been whistling
in the dark, especially when Juan Veron had a fierce shot parried out
and Paul Scholes could do nothing with the rebound. David Beckham hitting
the sidenetting didn't help the confidence of the home supporters either.
In fact the outlook seemed particularly gloomy when Alexios Alexandris
broke clean through with only Fabien Barthez to beat and it took a super
rescue by Laurent Blanc to keep the score goalless at the interval.
But in the second half United stepped up the pace and the chances began
to arrive. We were still on the edge of our seats when Ruud van Nistelrooy
had a penalty superbly saved by Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos and Juan Veron
smashed a free kick against the post.
United did not despair - unlike a good many fans - and super sub Ole Solskjaer
came on to put the Reds ahead in the 79th minute after van Nistelrooy
had battled the ball clear of the tenacious Greek defence.
Olympiakos threw caution to the wind and also put on an extra forward
but for them it succeeded only in leaving gaps at the back which were
exploited by Ryan Giggs for a goal and a deserved score for van Nistelrooy.
So United are through but this victory was about much more than qualification.
The manager's policies were being called into question, but not now. The
manager can push on with his plans without being heckled, which is the
least he deserves after the success he has brought to Manchester United
over the last 15 years.
Ferguson resisted the temptation to say 'I told you so' after the game
and instead paid tribute to his players.
"We were strong, not brilliant, and I am very pleased to qualify. We defended
very well and though we didn't get our goals until late. We have a good
record of doing that so I wasn't especially worried.
"Van Nistelrooy gets better and better. He's an old fashioned centre forward,
swashbuckling, determined and with thrust that makes him difficult to
handle. I thought he was fantastic in the second half.
"Ole Solskjaer never lets you down and of all the players you want to
see with a chance in the last 20 minutes it's him. You can bet your life
on him scoring.
"We showed good perseverance. We made 10 chances and scored three. I'm
happy."
And so should all those doubting Thomases of last week be, too!
