Onteora '79 - Newsletter for the Class of '79 and friends

May, 2004

Hi everyone,

We hope you had a great month of May and have enjoyed a relaxing Memorial Day weekend.  I've had a few problems sending this newsletter out this month, so if some of you are receiving it multiple times - please bear with me :-)  In this month’s issue, in addition to all of the usual items (flashback in history, update on donors and sponsors), we’ve included information on overnight accommodations, a snapshot of where all of you are today, and music and entertainment from our high school years (’76-’79).

We're pleased to report that the registrations are beginning to come in for the reunion, but let's begin this issue by reviewing the process for those of you that may have missed this info.

Reunion Registration

Recently we emailed out registration forms for the reunion.  It is VERY important that if you’re planning on joining us for the Saturday evening event at New World that we receive your registration AND payment by June 4th.  If you don’t have a copy of the form, please either send an email to Dave Shultis at [email protected] and ask for a copy or visit the reunion website where you can fill in an online form www.geocities.com/Onteora79.

Registration for Friday evening and the Saturday picnic is at no charge, and is open to the friends and/or family of the Class of ’79, but we would still like to hear from you if you’re planning on attending so we can get a handle on the number of people attending each event.

Saturday Night Dinner Party

New World Home Cooking in Saugerties (Rte 212) will be the host of our Saturday evening party.  The cost of the event is $60.  There will also be a cash bar.  The final details of the menu are being worked out and will be featured on the website, but here's a quick view of the main part of the buffet menu...

Bread Alone breads

Organic green salad

Chimmichurri style top sirloin skewers with fresh herbs, citrus and garlic

Thai BBQ salmon served over Thai slaw

Poulet moutarde - French country style free range chicken marinated with 2 mustards, shallots and wine

Fresh vegetables and roasted red potato

Carafes of ice black and herb tea

In case you didn't know...New World is a recipient of the 2001 Zagat Survey Award of Distinction, and Albany's Metroland gave New World its own "Best of" Category...Best Category-Defying Restaurant 2002!  Come and join us for what will certainly be an evening to remember.

Flashback – this month in history

10 years ago - May 25, 1994Solzhenitsyn returns to homeland

After 20 years in exile, Russian author Alexander Solzhenitsyn returned to his homeland. He had been expelled from the Soviet Union in 1974 after his three-volume work exposing the Soviet prison camp system, The Gulag Archipelago, was published in the West.  Source:  www.historyplace.com

15 years ago - May 18, 1989 - One million protesters take to the streets in Beijing
A crowd of protesters, estimated to number more than one million, marches through the streets of Beijing calling for a more democratic political system. Just a few weeks later, the Chinese government moved to crush the protests.  Source:  www.historychannel.com

20 years ago – May 8, 1984 - Soviets announce boycott of 1984 Olympics
Claiming that its athletes will not be safe from protests and possible physical attacks, the Soviet Union announces that it will not compete in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Despite the Soviet statement, it was obvious that the boycott was a response to the decision of the United States to boycott the 1980 games that were held in Moscow.  Source:  www.historychannel.com

25 years ago – May 29, 1979 - Woody Harrelson's father is arrested for murder
Judge John Wood, known as "Maximum John," is assassinated outside his San Antonio, Texas, home as he bent down to look at a flat tire on his car. Actor Woody Harrelson's father, Charles Harrelson, was charged with the murder after evidence revealed that drug kingpin Jimmy Chagra, whose case was about to come up before "Maximum John," had paid him $250,000.  Source:  www.historychannel.com
