Asatru, Odinnism, is rapidly growing in the U.S. Prison System. We have established an Asatru Information Clearinghouse for Odinists (Asatruars) in the U.S. Prison System. For established kindreds we would like to form a "web of knowledge" for all prison kindreds, exchanging information and learning from each other. We have begun an internet home page which can be your voice to share your spiritual beliefs, artwork, poetry, kindred reports, etc. The Hvitfolk Kindred is the sponsor of this web page, and we are here for our down kinsmen, to give you as much information and assistance as we can. (A paper copy of the web page is available for people without access to the internet or computers.)For individuals who wish to pursue the creation of a kindred and/or become a Gothi, the Hvitfolk Kindred wants to give you the opportunity to learn what otherwise may not be available. Beginning a kindred and the role of the Gothar in prison entails many different aspects. The first of which is that you must be aware of the fact that in the past Asatru and Odinnists have experienced problems within the U.S. Prison System. Those with experience know of the need to deal with the Administration on an ongoing basis and the need to be willing to establish your rights as a religious organization. For those thinking of starting a kindred, we should warn you, you will more than likely be subject to harrassment on different levels of the administration. No one has said this would be an easy path, but if you have the heart and desire to start a kindred, we are here to support you to the best of our abilities. If you need assistance in preparing this information please let us know and we will be happy to help. Keep in mind, also, that Asatru is a recognized religion in many prisons across the U.S. and information about this is available to both you and the administration.
For those just beginning or simply wanting more information about the beliefs of our Ancestors and the wisdom of our Gods and Goddesses we can help you find the materials you are looking for, whether educational or ritual. (We are not suppliers, but may be able to help you find what you're looking for.)
We have also created an in-depth study course covering all the aspects of being a Gothi. This study course has been created by and for individuals inside the prison walls. This will be an on-going project, with no real end in sight, for how could one ever gain all the knowledge needed to be a Gothi? Being a Gothi means to be continually searching for wisdom with others along the path. Gothi leterally means: "He who speaks the godly tongue." If you would like to be an asset to this course we would appreciate all of your input and ideas. If you are an established Gothi we are asking you to get involved and share the information you possess with others who wish to travel the path.
Any articles, poems or pagan artwork you would like to contribute will be considered for publication. Also, quarterly kindred reports are welcomed and will be published. Get involved, people, let's make this project flourish with pride. Let us let the greater Asatru community know that the kindreds behind bars are truly Asatru and are an asset to the greater Asatru Community.
