TRIVIA
At one
time, the government wanted to grant minority status to the Cajuns of Louisiana.
New
Orleans was not the first city in the United States to hold Mardi Gras. Nor was it anywhere in
Louisiana. The city was Mobile, Alabama.
New
Orleans was not the first settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. It was 4 hours
northwest, the town of Nachitoches, LA. It is also one hour southeast of
Shreveport on the Red River. The movie “Steel Magnolias,” starring Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Sally Field,
Shirley Mac Laine, Olympia Dukakis, and Darryl Hannah, was filmed there.
Louisiana State University is home to more Catholic students than any other
college or university in the United States.
In Cajun music, the main instruments are the fiddle, triangle, and the accordion. However, the fiddle and the triangle were really the original instruments. The accordion was introduced by the Germans. Similarly, in Hawaiian music, the ukulele was introduced by the Portuguese. And when you listen to the music of Carlos Santana, he blends the rhythms of Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa with the psychedelica of San Francisco. All these examples clearly show how cultures influence other cultures, but more importantly, that music is the universal language.
