NOTES:Herbert Marshall was a soldier for England during WWI and lost a leg. The script suggested that the heroine has a liason with the Uhlan commanding officer (Veidt). This suggestion was intended to raise the film's emotional temperature and to enhance the sexual clout of the two stars. But the recent Youssupoff libel case caused problems for Michael Balcon, who felt obliged to protect his studio from litigation, and so the completed film was more sexually anodyne than the original plan. Nevertheless, advertisers were told to use Veidt's sexual charisma as a selling tactic. Reference: The Unknown 1930's.
