Summary: When both her parents succumbed to a cholera epidemic when she was twelve years old, Rachel was left alone to fend for herself. She moved from town to town looking for any kind of work that would earn her a meal, a place to sleep and a few coins in her pocket. The older she became, the more tired she got of working long hard hours every day  for measly wages and a place to stay. It was during this time that she discovered how much money a person could win at one single hand at poker. She took to sneaking into saloons late at night so she could observe the individual players techniques of playing the game. By the age of twenty she had mastered every kind of scam she had ever observed and was making a living for herself, although it wasn't the type of living either of her parents would have wanted for her.

Then she met Henry Dunne and fell in love with Henry Dunne and her life was changed for her. She gave up her sordid lifestyle and settled down into a loving one with Henry. They had only been married a short time when a former lover of Rachel's showed up on the farm with his younger brothers in tow.

When Henry ordered them off of  their property, the men killed Henry in cold blood. after witnessing Henry being killed, Rachel had rushed out of the house with a rifle in her hand and shot after the fleeing men, fatally wounding one.

Not only did Rachel endure the anguish of burying her husband, but also the loss of her child as well. To make matters even worse on the young widow, she found out that she was being charged with murder for the death of the man she had shot and was forced to flee herself or lose her life.
