Kid's Intro

My Darling Doritha,

Kid paused, scratching his head as he studied the tablet that lay on his lap. After a minute's deliberation, he scratched through the words he had written and started again on a fresh sheet of paper.

My Dearest Doritha,

No, that still wasn't right. Kid tore the paper free of the tablet and added it to the crumpled pile at his side.

Dear Doritha,
I have made my way safely to Nebraska territory. The weather here is cold and wet and I am glad that you did not come with me as you would probably be miserable. I hope this letter finds you well.

Kid stopped again, unsure of how to go on. He thought he ought to say something about how much he missed her, but somehow the words wouldn't come. He licked the tip of the pencil thoughtfully and continued.

I bought a horse. I call her Katy and she is a good mare. I had to fight in a boxing contest to win the money to pay for her, but I am not sorry I did. She seems very trusting and is a gentle horse. You would like her. I am on my way to a little town called Sweetwater, where I hear there is work. I know you said you didn't mind me borrowing the money, but it bothers me and I hope it is a debt I will not have long. I will write more later. It is so cold now that my fingers are numb and I cannot hold the pencil well. It is almost springtime here, I will hate to see what the real winter weather feels like.

Kid stared at the letter, then simply scribbled his name as a closure.
