WINNER OF THE DRESS RAFFLE

FEBRUARY 14, 1860

"Blythe, they're about to draw the numbers for the raffle," Kid brought her a glass of punch. "Didn't you tell me you bought a couple tickets?"

"Yeah, but I'm not gonna win," she smiled. "I only bought the tickets to help the school."

"Well, you might be surprised," Kid smiled.

Blythe merely smiled back, certain that she wouldn't win anything. "Why don't we just go for a walk instead," she suggested.

"That sounds good to me," Kid smiled.

"Let me get my coat," Blythe handed her raffle tickets to Kid. "I'll be right back."

When she returned a few minutes later, the raffle was still going on, but Kid wasn't where she had left him. Looking around, she saw him standing by the table where the raffle prizes were. She walked over to him and laughed when
she saw him holding up a dress.

"Why Kid, did you win a dress? I'm sure it will look really good on you," she teased.

"Ha, ha, very funny," Kid smiled. "But I didn't win, you did."

"Me?"

"Yep." He held the dress out for her to see.

"Wow, it's beautiful," Blythe held the dress up to herself and spun around. It really was beautiful. It was very simple, a lightweight flowery white fabric with tiny lavender flowers. Pretty enough to wear to church or for a special occasion.

"I know," Kid suggested. "Let's celebrate your victory by going out to dinner tomorrow night. You could wear your new dress." He smiled. "I for one can't wait to see you in it."

"I'd like that Kid," Blythe smiled. "But it's the middle of February. This is more of a spring or summer dress. I'll tell you what, we'll go to dinner as soon as it is warm enough for me to wear it."

"I'll look forward to it," Kid smiled.

WINNER OF THE SUIT RAFFLE

FEBRUARY 14, 1860

Karen stood in the middle of the crowd as Caller Bob called out the names of the winners in the raffle.

"And for the suit . . . Karen Jamison. Congratulations to all of you. You can pick up your winnings at the table here before you leave."

At the end of the dance, Karen walked over to the table and picked up the suit and her and Ike left the dance.

The next morning Karen wrapped up the suit. The night before she had decided to give the suit to her uncle for his birthday, which was coming up in two months. She wrapped a pretty bow, made of ribbon, around the package and it was finished. She was planning on going to Silver Falls, where her uncle lived, next month. She was meeting a horse trader there. Her stock of horses was getting low and she was planning on buying more. She placed the wrapped package in her bottom dresser drawer for safekeeping.

WINNER OF THE SADDLE RAFFLE

FEBRUARY 14, 1860

After Caller Bob called out the winning number, Melissa cried out, "Yipee!!!" Excited she jumped up in the air.

She quickly waded through the crowd and ran up on the stage where Caller Bob said, "I think we have the winner right here." Melissa showed him her ticket, and then Caller Bob said, "Melissa Hagan is the winner of the saddle." Melissa gave Caller Bob a big hug and then went back to join her group.

Later that evening Melissa told Jacy that they could throw out her old saddle now. But Jacy told her no that she was going to keep it because soon she hoped to get her a horse. She also told Melissa that she would bring the saddle home tomorrow after she helped Caller Bob clean and straighten up his place.
