AT THE VALENTINE'S DANCE! FEBRUARY 14, 1860 |
| Walter took his appointed position on the stage that Caller Bob and
several of the young riders had built for this particular occasion. Walter had learned to
play the banjo and guitar when he was a wee one. His pa had taught him. Since they had
already had a volunteer for the guitar position, he had volunteered for the banjo spot.
The other musicians took their places on the stage. At 9 p.m. Caller Bob took his appointed place standing in the middle of the band. Walter was playing the banjo, Daniel was playing the guitar, Justin playing the harmonica, Luke playing the fiddle and Serena playing the tambourine. Caller Bob sang a few slow songs and then he said, "Grab your partner and get her on the dance floor. Its time for a good old fashion square dance. He noticed Melissa pull Jimmy into a square and watched as Jimmy tried his best to remember the calls, and Melissa would grab his arm and pull him through the moves when he got lost. They all had a good time even though some messed up. Walter kept his eyes on two distinct squares. One square had Teaspoon, Dev, Ted, Rose, Michael, Jemima, Jacy and CJ and the other one had Melissa, Jimmy, Buck, Caly, Ike, Karen, Kid and Blythe. He liked watching Melissa and Jacy dance. It reminded me of a time and place a long time ago. |
