NOVEMBER 7, 1860

Walter was inside his office at the hotel. He had just slit opened his letter from Drucilla and was about to read it when there was a knock on the door. "Come in."

Sheriff Teaspoon opened the door and poked his head in. Seeing that Walter wasn't preoccupied with anyone he entered. "Good afternoon, Walter." He walked in and took a seat.

"Hello, sheriff. What can I do for you?" Walter figured he was here on official business of some sort because he hadn't had a visit from him in a long while.

"This isn't any official business, Walter." Teaspoon replied.

"Oh?" Walter was a little surprised.

"I was wondering if you've noticed anything different about Jacy?" Teaspoon didn't feel like beating around the bush today.

"Different? What do you mean?" Walter inquired.

"Well, I can't exactly put my finger on it. But she just seems different, not like her old self." Teaspoon wasn't quite sure he understood what he meant himself and didn't exactly know how to explain it.

"Hmmm . . . it has been a few months. Maybe she's just feels strange seeing you because of the horse incident." Walter wasn't quite sure if that could be it or not. He hadn't really had a chance to spend any quality time with Jacy which he hoped to rectify that soon. "Maybe you should talk to her again about it. Tell her something that will put her mind at ease about the incident."

"No, I don't think that's it. We've already had that talk, and she says she understands that I was just doing my job. It's something else. It's like she . . . well like it's her first time in Dreamville." Teaspoon rubbed his chin while trying to explain how he thought Jacy was acting.

"Well, you remember when she first came here. She was very shy until she got to know people more. Maybe she feels like she's been out of touch with everybody for so long that she's kind of afraid of what people think of her for running off and she's watching and waiting to see how people will react to her now that she's back. I'm sure she will ease her way back into our community like she did before. And then you'll wonder why we even had this conversation." Walter smiled.

"Maybe," Teaspoon stood up to leave, "Maybe so. But if you get a chance would you see if she has something else on her mind that's bothering her. I know you're like an uncle to her. Maybe you can get her to open up more." Teaspoon waited for Walter's reply.

"I'll go to see her in a few minutes. I've been meaning to see her anyway. I've just been wrapped up in a lot of things. But I need to make more time for her. She needs to know that she still has her friends here in Dreamville. She probably thinks that we don't care any more, but I'm going to change that today." Walter watched as Teaspoon opened the door. "I'll let you know something later today."

"Alright. I hope it's nothing, just an old man looking for something that really isn't there." Teaspoon thought there was something more wrong with Jacy than her thinking that people didn't like her, but he hoped he was wrong.

After Teaspoon left, Walter unfolded his letter and begin to read. When he was done he decided he would have to go visit Jacy and then ride out and inform Rachel of Drucilla's decision to sell her mill. He told Meghan that he was going out for a while and then headed over to the PEG. Entering he said, "Good afternoon, Jacy."

Jacy had a piece of paper in her hand and she quickly folded her hands behind her back, so that Walter wouldn't see her paper. "Good afternoon, Mr. Simmons."

"Mr. Simmons? Now my dear you know that we're on a first name basis. Just because you ran off doesn't mean that our friendship has changed any." Walter walked over to Jacy and to show that their relationship was still the same, he gave her a big hug.

At first Jacy stiffened against him, but finally she relaxed. "Ah . . . I'm . . . just trying to fit back in." It was the only thing that she could think to say as she pulled back from him. It wasn't too far from the truth at all because that's exactly what she was trying to do, fit in.

"Jacy, you don't have any enemies here in town. At least none that I know of. Your friends all know that you didn't take those horses, and even Cody's not mad at you for lying about your pa, so I don't understand why you feel as though you have to be so . . . so quiet around people." Walter stated. "Just be yourself like you were before."

"It's just kind of . . . kind of hard." Jacy said as she thought if only they knew.

"How about having supper with me tonight?" Walter asked. Maybe some social interaction was what she needed.

"Tonight? Well . . . ummm . . ." She really didn't have any plans, but she really didn't want to have supper with him. How could she get out of it? She would just have to make up some excuse.

"Oh come on. We'll have a good time. Your choice, we can eat at my hotel or the Silver Spoon." Walter offered.

Jacy was about to decline when she changed her mind. Not because she wanted to go to supper with Walter, but because she wanted to watch Charity. Jacy knew that Charity liked Cody. She could tell by the way she looked at him and by the way she acted when Cody was around. Jacy wanted to get to know Charity more, but hadn't figured out how yet. Maybe she could think of something while watching her at the restaurant. "Alright, we'll go to the Silver Spoon. I didn't feel like cooking anyway."

"Good, I'll pick you up at six." Walter smiled at Jacy and she nodded. He left and headed out of town to the Pony Express station.
