JULY 3, 1860

Walter had watched Ted cross over to the saloon. He knew Ted didn’t drink but was going there to see Jacy. He wasn’t sure but he thought that Ted liked Jacy for more than just a friend. He felt a little sorry for Ted because he knew that Jacy and Cody were a couple.

He knew that Jacy was having problems running the saloon because of lack of customers. He wished he could help her. After finishing straightening his office, he watched Jacy and Ted walk over to the hotel. He exited the bank, locked up and headed to the hotel. If he couldn’t give her any suggestions maybe he could at least give her some support.

No one would recognize Walter as being the same man who had first came to Dreamville. He had been an all ‘Business Man,’ but since Jacy and Melissa came to town, he was doing more socializing. He was helping people learn to square dance, and several times he had gone riding with Desiree. And lots of times you could find him in the saloon listening to Desiree sing.

Upon entering the hotel he went over and said hello to Ted and Jacy. Jacy invited Walter to join them, and he did so. After supper they discussed the saloon.

"I just don’t know what to do. That bordello is taking all our business. Why did they have to have a casino in there, too?" It was a rhetorical question and the fellas knew it.

"Well, maybe you could get the sheriff to bring the gents in by gun point." Walter thought a little humor might cheer her up. Jacy did crack a smile, but it didn’t last long.

Jacy knew she should be better company, but thinking it and doing it were two different things, especially with the mood she was in. Finally, she said, "Maybe I should target another group."

Ted and Walter had puzzled faces. "What do you mean?" Ted asked.

"Well, the bordello targets the men, maybe I should get the ladies." Jacy replied.

"I still don’t understand." Ted said.

"I should get the ladies to come to the saloon." Jacy explained.

"How? Most of the respectable ladies won’t come into the saloon." Walter stated.

"I think I could talk a few into coming," she said as she thought of Samantha and Kimberly. "I have an idea. Are you still willing to help me?" Jacy directed her gaze to Ted.

"Sure, what do you want me to do?" Ted couldn’t think of what she could have in mind.

"What about you?" Jacy turned her attention to Walter.

"Sure, I’ll help." He volunteered.

"Come on then." Jacy stood up and started leaving.

Walter didn’t know what she was up to, but if it would make her happy again, he was all for it. "Where are we going?"

Heading for the door, Jacy replied, "To the saloon, we need to talk to Jimmy." Jacy knew she would need her partner’s permission before doing what she was thinking. She just hoped that he would be supportive of her idea.

Walter and Ted followed Jacy over to the saloon. They were confused and eager to learn what Jacy had in mind. "What are you going to talk to Jimmy about?" Ted asked as he pushed the little swinging saloon’s doors in so that he could enter.

"Darn!!" Jacy exclaimed as she entered. "I forgot he’s not here."

Just as Jacy said this, Jimmy walked in and said, "Who you lookin’ for?"

"You," Jacy said as she turned around to look at Jimmy. She walked over, took his hand and started pulling him, heading for the office. "We need to talk. I have an idea to get people in the saloon." Interested Jimmy let Jacy lead him along. This was the first time he had seen a spark in Jacy’s eyes since they had started their new venture. He was glad that she was happy. He just hoped that her idea was a great one.

On there way to the office Jacy turned her head to make sure Walter and Ted were following them, but they weren’t. They had both thought that Jacy wanted to talk to Jimmy privately. "Ted, Walter come on." Not waiting for a response she kept going.

All four of them went into the office. With the door closed Jacy explained her idea. Ted and Walter didn’t like the idea much, but how could anyone refuse a pretty smiling sparkling green-eyed lady. Jacy persuaded Jimmy to try her plan cause it wouldn’t hurt if it didn’t succeed. Ted and Walter wasn’t so sure about that because they were the ones that were involved in the plan more so than anybody else.

To help smooth things over, Jacy promised she would get someone else to do it to. They weren’t sure that she would be able to, but it relieved them some to know that someone else had to do what they were going to do. Jacy’s plan would be kept a secret until Friday night.

After they all left the office, Jimmy left the saloon and rode out of town on a mission. Jacy went down to the general store, and Ted and Walter sat in the saloon drinking a free beer. They whispered back and forth about the plan.

Ted thought what a birthday! He hadn't told anybody that today was his birthday. There was no reason to, but he had planned on having a nice quiet supper with Jacy and then asking her to go for a buggy ride with him. Unfortunately his plans had all changed. Now he was committed to this unusual plan of Jacy's. He didn't like the plan much, but he wanted to please Jacy.

Desiree and Ivy were very curious as to what had went on behind closed doors. That night Desiree and Walter would be out riding, and Desiree would try her best to wheedle the information out of Walter, but he wouldn’t even give her a clue. Instead he would keep changing the topic to her singing, and she finally gave up and sang for him.
