FEBRUARY 13, 1861
Walter was trying to do some paperwork in his hotel office, but his mind kept drifting back to Desiree's disappointing face when he had told her that he wouldn't be able to attend the Valentine's dance. He had just hired her to be the new cook, and he knew that Marta had offered to do the cooking for her, so that Desiree could attend the dance. He also knew that the restaurant would be closed because Charlie was going to the dance. "Oh what the heck." He said as he stood up.
Entering the kitchen where Desiree and Marta were he announced that the dining room would be closed tomorrow night since he had a date with a very lovely lady for several rounds of square dancing. Desiree was stunned and happy at the same time. All she could do was smile at Walter. After his announcement he quickly made his departure.
"I can't believe it. He's actually going to close down the dining area to go square dancing." Marta exclaimed.
"He's not always the business man, Marta. He has a social life, too." Desiree went back to work with a big grin on her face.
